Outboard motor help

So i went to look at a 22' skeeter bayboat yesterday. It has an '08 mercury (yes i know, I like yammys too) 225 optimax. Hour meter shows 106hours. On inspection of the motor it looked pretty clean. No rust or water spots on the bottom engine area itself. There was rust on the air compressor and some rust on a screw underneath the air compressor which made me think there was a water leak some where. There was also rust just on the bolts on the port side of the housing which is directly under the air compressor. The owner "says" the spark plugs only have 8 hours on them. We pulled the plugs for the compression test and 3 of the 6 were rusted pretty good. I was busy chasing my son around and didnt see where he pulled the rusted ones from and if it was from same side. He said they were not from the same side tho. We were unable to do a compression test bc he forgot to charge the batteries and the engine wouldnt turn over. I hired a mechanic to go look at it but im 2nd guessing myself on this buy. To me its either a leak around the compressor or a blown head gasket but im no mechanic and thats why i come here. Thoughts? Here is a few pics of the compressor

Where would the rust be coming from and why would 3 of the 6 plugs be rusted if they supposably only have 8hrs on them.

Hell if I know but at least now I understand what you're asking.
I would walk away if I had ANY doubts.

Why would the plugs every rust in?? May have been underwater somehow.
No way I would pay anything for that motor without see it run under load and having a mechanic check it out.

That's what I thought when I saw it. It looked like it was submerged.

There is a water leak. Look close at the drip white line.
I would have a shop do a full check and a computer read out. Cost around $150, but cheap insurance.

It's most likely leaking from the plastic water inlet fitting on the compressor. I can't count how many of those I've seen loosen up over time and leak. That is the original compressor that was built in Japan pre-tsunami. They're not know for their reliability and this is widely known in the Optimax world. It was replaced by an all black painted compressor built in-house and they have been flawless. We have yet to see a Mercury-built black compressor failure since 2011.
Don't trust the hour meter if it's not a digital Mercury gauge. A Mercury dealer can tell you the true total run time from the PCM. We're off Highland Rd. in BR if we can help you out. If they won't let a Mercury dealer check it out, run.
Was there any black paint on the spark plug porcelain? If so, they're original.
Just like any modern day outboard, they're only as good as the servicing dealer. It seems as though that engine was neglected some. It just needs a little TLC and it would be a very reliable engine for you. Their fuel economy is hard to beat. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

I have an outboard that is more than ten years older than that one.
No rust spots inside the casing.
None.
Walk away.

Walk. Unless the price reflects such a low price that you can afford to dump cash into the motor.

Thanks for the reply. I had 2nd guessing on the motor after seeing that and made me alittle gunshy. I decided to back out of the deal. Im sure its an easy fix but i dont want to buy a boat and doubt it from the start.

Check compression, crank it on the hose and let it run a few and check it again, while your looking for leaks and so forth.
