Me and little DonChowder went for a pig hunt yesterday. Lake Sonoma has quite the population of wild pigs but they're wily and tough to find at times. Yesterday was no exception.

All in all we hiked roughly 5 miles of nasty (but gorgeous), mountainous terrain. And in the end we were rewarded with some fine swine....150 lb (roughly) of sow with a really nice fat layer.

This was some of the terrain we hiked. We hit multiple ridges like this one.

Young DC with his first piggie.

A valiant effort by the krewe de dog.

Ultimately we had to float the pig down the river because of the distance back to the bikes (pig being towed behind on dog leashes). It actually was good since it cleaned and cooled the carcass.

She even made it down a few waterfalls in the process.

California taxes are high, cost of living is high, gun laws suck in a big way...but if you're an outdoorsman and love beautiful scenery it ain't that bad.

So, you contaminated that water supply with the various swine borne diseases?

Not saying that it wasn't already contaminated but after the feral hog class I attended, I'm not touching another one without gloves and I wouldn't put one in a water supply.

30-30 Marlin. Rem Core-Loc...no exit wound.

She must been a mean old bitch because the dogs never once got grabby with her.

Awesome pictures. It sucks that California politics ruins that beautiful scenery for everyone who wants to live there.

Absolutely nothing better than a good outing with your son or your dad. Congrats on making a great memory and a positive affect in your son's life.

I got a kick out of the pic dragging the sow with dog leashes. I have used, a rifle sling, a dog leash, a fresh cut pole and vines, a recovery strap, and barbed wire in the past to drag hogs.

Public or private land? You go with a guide? Those your dogs?

I got family in San Fran and have been thinking about going on a guided hunt for a visit.

meh, hell he just ran dogs all over the place and killed a pig with a 30/30...there are places in Louisiana where he would damn near get strung up.

Private land with a guide and his dogs. Brett Farve is hunting with him today and tomorrow.

I guess the guide doesn't really watch sports. He asks me...

Hey, do you know a Brent Farve?
It's Brett.
Oh...who is he?
Why?
He's supposed to be hunting with me Tuesday and Wednesday.

DC

thx for sharing

did you have to use lead free bullets ?

My friend in SoCal use to hunt the Tejon Ranch which is now "environmentally friendly" as he must use green bullets :(

Nope. Good old fashioned lead.

Northern California is filled with a bunch of brush okies that don't always take kindly to the laws enacted. Lot's of country boys up this way.

sure is a gorgeous state. $27 for a pig tag seems a bit much, when they need to get rid of them. perhaps we can affect a positive change in the game laws around here.

pigs are tough to hunt just about everywhere. heck, BCNWR is loaded with them, and they stay hidden all day in the palmetto.

new pad is nice. just waiting on my new CA driver's license, so i can get me a resident hunting and fishing license, then a bid from Chowda for the outdoor hookup. I did workday on an outdoor preserve this weekend, dropped some hunting bits, but they didn't bite.
