If you want a nice rifle to pass to your son someday, there are only a few to consider: Automatics
The Browing takedown. A basic Grade I will probably run you around five hundred dollars Levers
There are only two worth considering. One is the Browning BL 22. This is a really nicely done little rifle that is very light and handy. Its one fault is that it has one of the heaviest triggers you'll ever see until you get it broke in well.
The other is the Marlin 39. This is the Cadillac of lever action .22s. However, it is a full sized rifle and with the according length and weight. Once broken in, it is slicker than iced snot. Bolt Action
The only one worth considering that is commonly available anymore is the CZ 452 and the variants thereof. It is very handy and accurate and feels like a rifle. A very nice rifle for practicing for your big game bolt.
There are a few others and some may quibble with this list. But I doubt that anyone would argue that if you got one of the guns on this list, you would be dissatisfied.
