I haven't freshwater fished since I was in 6th grade (I'm 35), and looking to try the Blackwater Lakes area or the Waddill area because of their proximity to BR. I would like to target Bass, but would be interested in catching anything really. Any tips on those areas or baits to try and use.

If those areas are a waste of time are there any other places pretty close by worth trying out right now? I read something about Bayou Plaquemine but not too sure about that. I'll be in a kayak fwiw.

All of my gear is saltwater so I won't be going to buy a full freshwater tackle box right off the bat. Are there a handful of baits I shouldn't go out with for my first time though? Right now I have spinner baits and some spoons that I use on reds that I think would work for bass too. I also plan to Texas rig some worms that I have. Past that I'm not sure what to get. What I really don't know is what type of set up should I have to target sac a lait or bream in case bass are scarce.

I've fished Blackwater quite a few times in the yak and it's pretty slim pickings....especially when it gets hot. Plenty of bucket fisherman there all the time. I know Waddill is catch and release...not sure if they allow kayaks or not.

I've fished bayou Plaquemine and you can catch a few there if the water is clean enough.

Also, you should try LSU lakes in Feb and March. I've had some really good trips there.

I'd suggest running 30 minutes to Henderson with that kayak.

Waddil is just a few small ponds too small for a kayak, and is catch and release.

Thanks on all the tips of avoiding Waddill. I will.

quick question though, I have an idea of what to use and tactics for bass. I probably won't be very effective at first but that's fishing. What baits or tactics should I be doing if the bass bite is too slow and I want to try for sac-a-lait or bream
