New Kayak review, Perception Pescador 12
Posted on 4/23/14 at 10:15 pm

I just joined the yak club this afternoon so I haven't made any mods to the kayak yet. I chose the Pescador because 1. it's cheap ($500 before taxes) 2. it's proven (Wilderness Systems tarpon 08 model rebranded) and 3. I've been in a friend's and felt comfortable.
Took it on the water today and it really cuts through the water. I don't know anything about kayaking distances or speeds, but I went 3 miles in an hour at LSU lakes and didn't get tired or sore. The seat is nice for the price, and I felt comfortable for the hour I was in it. The kayak's very stable sitting down, but I don't think that I could stand up in it for long. I'm 23 and pretty limber and I'd probably fall over if I tried, but I didn't have a problem reaching the front hatch, either of the middle hatches, or the back recess.
The kayak came with one fish holder, but I'll add another one soon. It can also have an anchor trolley set up, and I'll probably do that before too long too.
As far as quality goes, I'm very happy. The seals all seem good and the kayak itself seems sturdy. There wasn't an ounce of water inside the kayak after my trip. Some water did get around my feet through the scupper holes if I shifted my weight, but I stayed a lot drier than I expected. My butt never got wet, but if I weighed much more (I'm 180), I could see that being an issue.
I got a truck bed extender from Harbor Freights, but I'm going to return it because I don't think I'll need it. Four 10-foot ratchet straps had it secure enough that if I pushed the kayak it shook the truck.
ETA: I got a 230cm Bending Branches paddle from Austin Kayak. I'm 6' and the calculator that I used put me at 230-240cm. Problem is, about every 5th or 6th stroke, I graze the side of the kayak. It may be that I'm just erratic and haven't gotten my stroke down, but I'm worried that the paddle may be a little short. Would the 10cm difference be a big improvement?

I have the same yak and also do 4 straps, that shite aint going no where. If it falls out on I30 or I20 someone is getting a slightly used and beat up kayak.

I ordered through River Less Paddled here in Lake Charles. It's not Roman's fault, I ordered a custom color combo and I knew it would take a bit longer. I'm just getting anxious and being impatient. Roman that it would be here this week but his last order's manifest came in and my yak wasn't on it. Jackson said 4-5 more days. So next week maybe (fingers crossed).
I want to get some time on the water with it before the big trip is all and the reds and specs are starting to run in weatcove and big lake.
To OP: good on you brother, happy for you. She looks like a fine vessel.

No need to spend more money....
looking at your pic, you have the cam strap just running through the bow handle.
wrap it one more time around the handle and the boat wont swing around.
folks spend money on a boat, then more money on stuff to keep the boat in the truck.
ps, i have the same boat.....i like it

I've got a 97" paddle (238cm) cause it was the longest cheap paddle I could find. I'm 6'3" and I grazed the side of the yak a lot when I took it out Monday. I didn't have my elevated seat (forgot it ) so I was just on a cushion, so that may have something to do with it.
I have no advice, just interjecting my observations.

I think I'm going to stick with the paddle. I hit the side a lot less after I'd been on the water a while. I'm betting that it was just operator error

I have the exact same yak, except mine was the "angler" version. All that means is that it came with 2 rod holders.
Agree with you here. It's effortless to paddle and glides on the water.
After a few hours you'll start to get a little uncomfortable. But it's not unbearable.
I can stand up in mine for about 10 (if that) seconds before I have to sit back down. I'm 6'2" 185lbs.
I recommend These.... The yellow (small) will fit your yak.
Welcome to the club! I really like mine. Hope you'll enjoy yours too.
Here's a few pics of mine.
And I had more pics, but I just realized they're on my old phone. I'll take a couple more tomorrow if you would like.

Thanks, I'll check out those scupper plugs
ETA: I like what you did with yours too. I'll probably try to do something similar when I get some time

I'm currently in the process of adding a depth finder. I hate waiting on silicone to cure. Also added an anchor trolly since that last pic was taken. I'm removing the Scotty rod holder in the front because I really don't use it. Depth finder (humminbird PM175) is going in its place.

I highly recommend it. A windy day will kill your trip if you don't have one.

I have the pompano from west marine which is essentially the same boat as yours except it has two rod holders and a anchor trolley. Didn't come with a seat tho.
Get rubber chair ends from Walmart, can't remember which size. I tied a small piece of rope on them to make a loop and you have scuppers for 2$.
Then go buy you a igloo marine 25. Flip the hinges so it opens up long ways and then mount two PVC pipes on either side. Instant rod holders. Use the bungee straps to wrap around the rod holders to hold everything in. It fits perfectly behind the seat with room for a plano box.....lemme try and find some pics. BRB
here is an image of my cooler....dont mind my brittany
