Never realized there is science behind why I shoot so much better w/ peep sights

I'll flat out admit I suck at using a notched and blade style iron sights. I have a hard time with the sight picture and getting everything lined up properly, especially with elevation of the shot more so than windage. I always though I was just better at lining up the post in the middle of a circle on an aperture sight. But there is a mot more science behind it then that.
Being a photography geek who knows quite a bit on how camera lenses work I never put two and two together that the aperture sight uses the same fundamentals as a camera lens to increase the depth of field in your sight picture as well as creating a parallax free sight picture. Yes your aperture sights are parralax free when you keep the front post away from the fuzzy edges of the ring in your sight picture. You can do a quick experiment if you have a peep sight equipped rifle to see how dramatically better the sight picture is looking through the aperture. Look through the aperture focusing on the post and anything far away will be clear and in focus, but lift your head slightly continuing to focus on the front sight but no longer looking through the aperture and down range becomes an out of focus blur. The science behind it is the same as a camera lens increasing depth of field by looking through a narrower aperture. This article explains it pretty well.

And this one is more scientific in looking at Parallax shift with aperture sights.

I thought they were dumb when I was a child. Sickens me to think how many more roasted robins and cedars I could have had if I had known.

Never shot peep sights until I picked up an M16 in the army. Accurate to long distance - much more so than buckhorn sights.
If my eyes were still good enough to shoot open sights hunting, I would definitely have one mounted.

Peeps are great for aging eyes as the rear sight should "ghost" and the only thing you keep in focus is the front sight. VERY accurate sight.

i put aftermarket peep sights on an SKS...completely transformed the rifle. longer site radius and dead accurate within its range
plus i can actually see the target with my aging eyes

Does a ghost ring provide the same effect?

Got a chance to try out my new peep sights on my bone stock Ruger 10/22 carbine.
Regular 10/22 sights. Sights were off and need to have have the windage adjusted. Had to hold high and right to get in the black. Pretty big spread for me at 25M
With my Tech sights.
Top left was the first shot then I adjusted the sight. Two more on the edge of the diamond with 2nd and 3rd where I dialed in more windage. Then 7 more with one high shot and one just off the diamond.

If you look closely the peep will have a clear spot in the center, it will naturally center your front sight. I like them and my rifles with peeps have no scope, only thing that sucks is they disappear at HOG-DARK:30.

Bump - can y'all recommend some iron sights for a .22 Henry for squirrel hunting?

If you don't want a scope which, I'm assuming you don't. Look at Skinner sights. They're the best aftermarket peep sights IMHO.
