been having problems with one of the door locks. I'm sure its original to the house, but it seems to have given up for the most part. should i just go the big box route or are there better options in town?

I typically just go to HD or Lowes and pick one up...be prepared to shell out some cash, as the decent ones are a lot more expensive than you would think.

Kind of like gun safes, the ones you can pick up at a big box store can be picked and broken into in far less time than you can imagine, but most theives aren't picking locks.

I have Schlage from Lowes FWIW.

Big Box stores are ok. Just stay away from Kwikset's "Smart Key" line of knobs and bolts. Get a good set of Schlage and pay the extra to have the store "key" them alike.

I recommend Schlage or Baldwin but any lock from the big box is fine because locks only keep honest people out.

Schlage is the nicer than wiser or kwikset. Too pricey for rental property IMO. But for your own house it's the way to go.
