And those are in North Carolina, as far as I recall.

It had to have been a coyote. When my catahoula was a puppy I had one run up into the yard to snag him while he was out for a midnight piss. It turned and ran off when I jumped from the porch. With the added emotions and adrenaline that was the biggest coyote I've ever seen. It came to within 15yds of my house in the full porch light

Damn, I'm getting ready to move out to the country on a couple acres and this never crossed my mind, has me concerned about our pups. They are around 14 lbs and 20 lbs. Any protective measures we can take around the house to keep them safe from the yotes...taller fence or something? Spot lights in the back yard?

Taller fence and get a bigger dog are the ideas coming to mind. Now that my dog is full grown he wrecks shop on anything that comes near our house.

Coyote, I've caught some very big ones. One had a pelt that was 63 inches from head to tail. They look a lot bigger bodied because of the thickness of their fur.

Coyote no doubt. 8 lb dog, panic situation, darkness makes it look like a monster.
