I have never been to Venice and will be coming up from Tampa. I will be using my dads 12' jon boat. Can anyone tell me where to launch, bait shops and any other info. that may be helpful, what areas to fish? I'm not asking for your hot spots just general areas.
Thanks.

Save a couple hours and fish around port sulphur/Buras or even Belle Chase. I wouldn't take a 12' boat anywhere in venice IMO.

Really bad idea. Your life is not worth it. Like others said, use a guide.

I really hope this guy is trolling......unless you're throwing that boat somewhere off the side of the road into the marsh....it's pretty much not safe anywhere to saltwater fish in a 12' jon boat.

honestly, go out with a guide and just tell him that you want him to show you some areas to fish with a small boat...they won't show you their best spots, but are usually pretty good about teaching folks the area...

I had one go with me in my boat out of cocodrie and he actually marked the spots in my GPS for me...after that, I was a loyal customer of their hotel and bought all of my supplies from them for years...

You could fish Buras with a 12' jon boat, Venice there just isn't anywhere safe in that size boat anymore down there. Too many crew boats, big shrimp boats, ocean liners, you get the idea.

I need to ask why come all the way up from Tampa to fish and bring a 12' boat?? I would go with a guide all the way before hauling a small boat all across creation in an area I don't know at all.

Well in that case...

Launch at Ostricha and mosey on across the river through the Ostricha locks, out into Quarantine Bay and go fish Sable Island... You'll be safe.

OF course when I was younger, under 10 maybe under 7,

We would take a 14' jon boat, 15 hp Evinrude with three pirouges tied behind it, 4 people in the boat with decoys and away we went down Grand pass to hunt.

Then remember we got a big boat a 17' Glasstron with a 70Hp motor and we would be at the horseshoe rigs and Domino rigs in a flash....

Amazing what was safe back then and is safe now...

That is my old mans boat and he is in La. But he only uses it to fish cat fish.. I am not towing it from Tampa.
I see there is kayak fishing in Venice where are all of these guys yaking. I figured if they can take a kayak out I could take this boat out.

There is plenty of protected marsh in venice you can fish with that boat, getting to it without being swamped is another issue. Would you take a twelve foot boat down the colorado river?

You could launch at yellow cotton marina in Venice. That area doesn't get nearly the boat traffic. You would have to fish the interior marsh around that area. You could also launch at Venice marina and fish the area around the wagon wheel. With the river being up, you may have to run further toward the gulf to find clearer water if you want to catch reds. Trout you would have to run even further.

Like others have said, port sulfur and Buras would also be good spots to check out with your boat size. As far as a 12ft boat, I would not run it down the river. Too risky in my opinion and I grew up down there. When I was 13-18, I had a 15ft flat with a 40hp Yamaha and sometimes I had to cross the river just to get away from the ship suction waves running from Venice to southwest and south pass.

Like others have said, fish empire/buras/port sulphur area. Stay away from the river if possible.
FYI leeville/fourchon would be a better option in a boat that size
