Does anyone have experience making picture frames? I want to make one, but don't have the tools and I'm not completely sure where to start.

I would assume I should buy a router and a rabbet bit, and need something to cut the joints to 45 degrees.

A hand saw and a miter box is your cheapest option. But a miter saw is a good investment and an easier option. Also a cheap pocket hole jig is a good way to join each piece.

I have an ordinary hand saw and a "skil" saw so I think I'm fine with that, unless I come across a deal to buy a miter saw. Is a compound miter worth the extra cost?

Have a recommendation for a router?

It is, also, get one that can cut a 12 inch board.

As far as routers, any cheap palm router will do the job. A router doesn't have to be a big investment. If you stick with Dewalt, bosch, craftsman, makita you can't go wrong. Also one with a plunge base can come in handy for other things but not really a picture frame.

Baby Doll bed I just finished building for my daughter. I need to sand it a little and let her decide on a finish. The tops of the toe board and head board are some hardwood that I got out of a pallet. Looks like maple but I'm not sure. The rest is made from pine scraps. I need to find something to use as a mattress for it.

It's expensive but the absolute best thing for this is the Lion miter trimmer.

One of the most accurate ways to cut a miter is with a table saw sled made to cut miters, you can build them from scrap lumber, next would be a miter saw. You can cut your rabbits, coves, bevels, all with a table saw.

I've had a compiund miter saw for 10 years. I don't think I've ever used the tilt miter (not sure what you call it)

Has anybody ever welded together their own fireplace grates?
Or has anybody used railroad rails to make them?
Looking for one

Are you planning on moving this thing, cause that can get heavy in a hurry? What rail weight do you have access to?

I will need to measure in my fireplace to see what size grate can go in.

Will need to find out with that too.

Just an FYI, rail weight is measured in lb/yd. So if you have access to 100 pound rail, for every three feet, it will weight 100 pounds.

Yes, just once. Ripped it on a table saw and cut the 45 on a miter saw.
