My son wants an airsoft rifle for his birthday...what is exactly the point?

What do you shoot with such a gun? Will this end up being a total waste of money or hours of fun?

Neighborhood wars. Safer than bottle rockets, arrows or BBs.

I had an airsoft in college and We'd have battles inside our Apt and house. They are great. We'd play american gladiator type game where you run through the obstacles.

My 10yr old has several of them. He shoots other kids.
Just get the protection and let them have a go.
And some of them are pretty badass. My son has a "sniper rifle" that he can hit a target at 50yds with it when pair with the proper weight ammo.
My nephew has a full auto m-4 that's pretty cool as well.

Plastic. And don't get the cheap ones. They aren't perfectly spherical and will curve like a Catfish Hunter spitball.

About 10 years ago, the kids in my neighborhood had wars and my yard was ground zero. And filled with the damn bb's

pretty much anything you want because its not as frowned upon at the party when you bust this sucker out opposed to the 22 bolt action after a few beers when you suddenly want to show off your shooting skills.
