"Adequate"? When you get to go elk hunting once a year, do you really want a cartridge that's just "adequate"?

Not me. I'd rather one that is "ideal", "outstanding" or "exceptional". People who claim that a .270 is a great elk gun probably also think that a .20 gauge is a great goose gun. Please.

If you shoot a .270 at elk, you limit yourself to 200, maybe 300 yard shots at most. And God help you if your "perfect bullet placement" is off a few inches by wind drift and you hit the shoulder bone. Have fun tracking that bull.

so you are telling me that Winchester is lying to me with the picture of an elk on their 270 wsm box?

I feel used.

Well, if you met a guy at the trail who said he had to shoot a bull 4 times, then there is no way a .270 would ever make a competent elk rifle. Oh, and 338 is too much.
Why do many elk guides not allow their clients to shoot a .270?

I never said a .338 was too much gun. I just said I thought the .300 magnums were just as good if not better. Are you gonna argue that a .270 is just as good or better for elk than a .300 magnum?

I get the argument that the 270 is enough gun and I also understand the part of being inadequate. Sure it will def. get the job done especially in an experienced shooters hands but you gotta ask yourself. Is this the best suited round for my targeted game? In all honesty I don't believe most would say yes.

ETA: by targeted game I mean the elk in discussion here.

Yep.

If you want to hunt elk with your .270 and limit yourself to shots less than 200 yards, and you enjoy tracking wounded animals, then by all means go for it.

What about a 7mm rem mag? Adequate elk round?
Adequate, yes. More so than a .270 because of heavier bullets and more muzzle velocity and energy.

Once again, a 7mm mag is an "adequate" rifle for elk, but why would you want to limit yourself with just an adequate rifle instead of having an "ideal" rifle?

Well, because most people don't have the budget to have a closet full of rifles that are ideal for each species they hunt. That or they have a rifle that they are comfortable with and don't want to switch. Ideal? No, I wouldn't call the 270 "ideal", but wouldn't call it inadequate. I would much rather have a guy shooting an elk at 300 with a .270 he's competent with then a schmuck with a 300 winny he just bought for his elk trip shooting at 200.

You don't need a closet full of rifles for elk hunting, just one that's more than just adequate. If people want to hunt elk with a .270, that's their prerogative, but they're handicapping themselves to shorter shots and perfect placement. I definitely don't want to be hunting and have to pass on the bull of a lifetime because he's out of range of a lesser caliber. I want to give myself every advantage I can, and I feel the .300 magnums do that.
