What are the mushrooms that grow on willows called? It's killing me that I can't remember their name.

Don't know, but do know the ones that grow in horse/cow shite.

Awesome. That's what they are called.

I've been meaning to go get a load of these down by the Wax. I saw a couple young guys filling up 5 gallon buckets last time I hunted there. When I saw how much they cost in the store, I was shocked.

This.
I'm primarily a carnivore, but I have to say these things are pretty good actually. Have an uncle that is always picking and cooking them in some fashion.

What about the ones on downed oaks?

I've never felt comfortable enough in my mushroom knowledge to collect them. Also, I don't really like them. But, if I could go out and get my own, I might be more inclined to "learn to love 'em".

champignon
They are delicious fried and in a gumbo. I been picking them since being a kid. Winter time, dead willow, find them when it warms up and the humidity is real high or real foggy.

If they are fresh you can tell by taking a knife and scraping the top taking off the clear membrane. Its better to cook by removing it anyways. Soak in a large tub of ice water, they will sink and it will kill all the bugs on them.
