My Toro is getting long in the tooth and some things are wearing out. We have always wanted two mowers anyway, and it will make a good second unit for those times when we both mow.

Anyway, this summer has presented problems for me using it. The rain and my schedule has been such that bagging has been impossible, and mulching isn't much better. I've had to use side discharge then deal with a hay covered back yard.

So, are any of the higher torque models better at tough/wet grass? My backyard almost never has dry grass-it just doesn't get enough sun, yet is still thick as shite.

Been looking at things like the Snapper High Vac, Craftsman Pro Series or Honda 190 cc.

Is this the right direction? Others?

I can only vouch for the snapper. My dad did a shitload of research on mowers a while back and the snapper is what he went with (i think it is 1 model below that one).

I have used it a few times and it is great.

I have been disappointed with my Toro as well. It has a hard time cutting thick St Aug, I have to go back and forth over weeds, and it'll randomly miss single blades of grass all around the yard. I'll probably end up with a Honda next time

St. Aug supplemented with Nutsedge and Dallisgrass

Just enough sun to make it grow tall, but not enough to where the leaves themselves are ever dry. The dew just sits there.

As we've discussed previously, I've got a Snapper Hi-vac Commercial - I cut with it in the rain the other day and it would clog up. I'm running a side discharge on it. It will mulch but I have to run the it slower. Mowed yesterday with it in dry conditions, it will haul arse if you can keep up with it. I love it, it's powerful, too. Hit some thicker grass with it, it will grunt a little and keep chugging. Kawasaki engine.

I've got an older consumer model I used to vac leaves with - it's the only vac mower (with a bagger) I've ever ran but it's the shite on leaves. ONe pass and it's clean as a whistle, only issue is the bag fills up really fast, and when that happens she turns into a leaf mulcher until I dump it.

I like doing that with my live oak leaves in March. I HATE raking. I don't mind having to stop often.

The two Snappers I've seen in stock locally have the Briggs & Stratton 850 Professional Series engine. Some here hate on B&S, but the last two I've had in Toro mowers have started fast and run fine. Issue seems to be power in the thick wet stuff. Of course, these were smaller engines.

One other benefit with the higher-end Snapper is, as of now, I can find every bearing and part for it online. The craftsman I bought in 2006-ish is a throw-away mower in comparison, although that craftsman is still running but only with a little needed modification.

well go get it!

I had one just like it in 96 when we bought our first house...was good for a small lot...but when we moved to where we are now, I was spending close to 4 hours just riding the mower,(slow+narrow cut) so I upgraded...

never liked the shifting on that mower honestly, that and those short skinny front tires would roll off the rim if you turned to sharp in top gear and they caught traction.

The randomly missed blades drives me nuts. Thought a good sharpening of the blade would take care of it but it didn't.

My mower is old but random missing blades hasn't been a problem until recently.

My Snapper will miss blades in centipede, but not in st. aug. A sharp blade helps a lot. I might have it set too high for the centipede, i'm not as familiar with cutting it vs. st. aug. I set it higher in summer.

Mine was a big PITA and a big POS. Well, it is dead now.

When out and bought a Bad Boy 60" zero turn. Took my cutting time and cut that down to a third of the time.

Why I didn't do this sooner.

Oh, that dam POS Toro always left a hay trail. Don't have that problem now.

i've got one of those 30" Toro Timemasters. It will be my last. I like the width but its way underpowered. If the grass is a little wet or tall I have to go pretty slow or overlap so much that the extra 8 inches is useless

i'll look at a 30' commercial model next summer.....

I just gave mine away. That mower was the best mower known to man. No shite. I have no idea where the grass clippings went but they were nowhere in my yard.

My blade is sharp. I've tried to grind different angles into it. Nothing works. Keep waiting for this one to die so I can justify getting a 32" commercial walk-behind with a sulky. It's their top of the line Super Recycler, but it still has a hard time cutting St Aug

I see your problem -- you're out there cutting grass.

Sounds like wife-training lessons are in order.
