My 7 yr old loves dirt bikes and has been asking for one for years. Is there anywhere locally to ride? What is the best type of bike to get him?

He has a razor sx500 but it's about time to upgrade to gas powered.

Any help would be appreciated.

the 2 best places to take him would be full throttle mx in hammond and gravity alley mx in breaux bridge. your getting into it at a bad time. the mx community is down in la right now. Gravity alley is only open a couple times a month, while full throttle is open every sat and sunday 9-4 and is VERY family friendly. full throttle has a full motocross track, a large field for the little ones, and a mini track for the smaller bikes and pit bikes. I would def recommend you upgrade him before taking him out there. i would suggest a honda CRF110 for him. it may be a little big at first depending upon how tall he is, but he will be able to ride it for a few years until he is ready to step up to a crf80/125 size bike. the great thing about the 110 is its semi auto, electric start, and they run about 2k brand new and even used they still sell for 1600-1800. this bike holds its value very well so even if he rode it for 2 years you wouldnt likely lose much at all in a sale. if you want more info, you can email me at my username at gmail.com id be happy to point you in the right direction.

Go watch a race one weekend first and let him check out the kids in his age group. If he can learn quickly to ride with a clutch, I'd put him on a 65 at that age. But if he's a bit timid, I'd go 4-steoke like the 110. Does he want to race or just ride for fun?

Going from a little electic bike to a 65 would be a pretty steep learning curve.

Btw make sure you have him the proper protective gear. Mx boots, a quality helmet, and good chest protector are all musts if you take him to a track.

There used to be a track in Kentwood, called Wildwood MX, it was nice years ago, not sure if they are still open.

If he is a fast learner, and wants to actually race, the 4 stroke is a good play bike, but he will not be competitive racing it. He will want a 2 stroke, with a clutch, and tons of seat time. Corners is what counts, charging corners and learning the front brake, needs to learn this early.

Loretta Lynns just wrapped up yesterday, go to vurbmoto.com and mxptv.com and let him watch some of the 65cc classes. Then get ready to buy a funmover and more bikes, and a golf cart.

Jump for show corner for dough!
Lots of good info so far. Biggest thing is just easing him into it. Don't be afraid to ask for help at the tracks either. The MX community is a great one and the majority of people will go above and beyond to help. Whether it be riding skills, mechanical questions or just general questions about the sport.
Its very addicting!

Thanks so much for all of the info!

When and where are local races? I can't seem to find any information on anything.

There won't be any any time soon. The last several have not been profitable for the track owners so they have put them off. There will be a big back the blue ride day at gravity alley in breaux bridge on sept 3rd. Check out the forums over at Motosouth.

My kid made the transition from a Honda Z50 to a KTM Pro Sr. , then to a KX65. And he barely had any seat time on the KTM because it was in the shop 5 of the 7 months we owned it. And he wasn't the most adept rider in the early days.
However, as said, those little bikes are pretty easy to sell for a decent price, so if you don't mind making the transition over a couple bikes the 110 isn't bad to start on. But if he has any interest in racing, the 110 is pretty useless.

Not sure if this is in line with what you had in mind but Louisiana also has a growing Cross Country series that host races all around the state with various classes to race in.

Here's the link to their site.

A cousin by marriage has a track in Kentwood. I believe he teaches out of there now. They started off with a small track in the front yard, a small circle track, and a horse racing track. I think he's got a big setup now, but I haven't seen him in around 5 years

I don't think he does that any more. They do have some LACC (cross country) races out there. Last time I was out there for an LACC race... he had some sort of ATV mud bog event a few weeks prior and tore the holy hell out of his property.

For the OP... LACC round 6 is August 20/21 in Wilson, LA (about 1 hour north of BR). Very fun family friendly events. My son is 8 and races the series. Practice on Saturday... kids race takes off at 8:00am and they race for 20 minutes. Bring him up there and check it out.

BTW I have 3 KTM 50's if you want to come get them before I toss them in the Mississippi River! My kid is moving up to a 65 (thank God).

ETA Like someone said... Full Throttle in Hammond is open every weekend usually and they separate practices between the big and little bikes. Wildwood in Kentwood is an awesome track and they have a kids track as well, but they don't open very often. Gravity Alley is typically open on Thursday nights and Saturday.

Thanks so much for the info. I know nothing about any of it. Are you serious about getting rid of the KTM's?

It's on Carruth Rd outside of Wilson. I actually go in the back way through Clinton. Keep an eye on AcadianaRacing.com.. they'll post a flyer in a couple of days.

Some video links...
