Going fishing in Costa Rica. Brother gets motion sickness and I'm trying to find things that may help him. Anyone got any tips? Heard intranasal scopolamine is pretty effective, but I'm not sure I can even find that.

I got it pretty bad this past summer on a tuna run out of Venice. I did not take any precautions and drank quite a bit the night before going out. I never vomited, but felt like t total shut for the first four hours of the trip. I was to the point I wanted to pay to be airlifted the 100 Miles to shore.

I don't know what to tell you to prevent the sickness, but don't do what I did.

If he is thinking about it he will probably catch it. From what I have seen the scopolamine patch works best. The other stuff probably works but in my experience they always get busy fishing and forget to re-dose. They will say I took it all day yesterday and at 5 am but they get sick at noon, 7 hours later. Then they puke the pills up. I have had a few people on my boat with the patch and it worked or at least they didn't hurl. There is some kind of shot they can take that will make it better but it knocks them out. Research says its 90% mental but 100% of the seasick people claim its not

Or use the scopolamine patches. You get dry mouth but works great. 2 Dramamine 30 mins before setting sail works for me.

I'd say it's 20% mental. Once you're sick, it's over. Nothing can make it better other than stable ground and or puking. Nausea hits me worse than most. Dramamine helps but you have to take it well in advance.

I have found that getting into the water for a swim helps a lot once you're sick. Of course, conditions have to be safe for this.

There are some herbal preventatives that work for many.

If he has time, go to his local MD to get a prescription strength preventative prescription.

Don't drink alcohol 24 hours prior to getting on boat

Don't eat fatty foods 36 hours prior to getting on boat

Don't drink coffee the morning of trip

Do drink double the amount of water you think you should consume

Stay at the back of the boat and out of the cabin

Get an easy rider if possible for the ride out

Keep eyes on the horizon

I've had good luck with Bonine. It either works or I don't get sea sick. Either way I hope I never find out which.

Meclizine available otc from the pharmacy works for a lot of my folks starting the dosage the night before. Rx strength anti-vert and ginger capsules available at Drugstore/GNC type places helps some also.

Scpalmine patches. start the trip off well rested and hydrated. You don't want your hangover to hit on the water. Trust me.

In my experience, Dramamine works well, none of the non medical solutions I've used seems effective. I have not tried ginger pills but that seems to be somewhat effective, though less than Dramamine (based on tests I've read about plus a myth busters episode that tackles exactly this issue). No experience with the medication you indicated though I have friends who have used the patch others have suggested and swear by it.

FTR, I was seasick once 35 years ago and can tell you that once you get seasick, it crosses your mind every time you get on a boat (at least in similar situations) for a long time afterwards. That's as big a challenge as actually getting seasick.

Also, it's about the only time when you don't fell better after puking.
