We have all had close calls. What was your most dangerous moment while hunting or fishing? Or other outdoor activity?

One of mine was almost going over the top of a dam in my boat while duck hunting.

Duck season before last I was headed out alone early one morning in the dark to an island on the river in my electric sneak boat. To get to the island you have to come out of an adjacent creek and travel alongside a dam to get to the main run of the river (the dam spans the creek and river). It began raining pretty steady with wind as I was headed to the duck spot, and the water was way up after numerous rains that week. As I came out of the creek and swung close to the dam a switch on the boat died and the motor stopped. By this time the wind and current was driving me towards the top of the dam. I swung my spotlight over to see the water just a few inches below the top edge of the dam and my boat being pushed in that direction. I pulled out the short paddle and began a furious paddle upstream and for a few moments thought I was going to have to try and grab a buoy to keep from getting swept over. After what seemed like forever I finally put some space between me and the dam and the wind let up some. To this day I still get chills thinking about going over that dam in my boat while wearing waders.

stepping in or out of the boat from the dock

stepping on to or off of the deer stand on to the steps.

approaching a wounded hog

retrieving a stuck bait from a cypress tree or stump where all kinds of stuff that wants to kill you or defend itself with venom is waiting.

me and my cousin got freaked the hell out one day, i had to leave a squirrel hunting trip early because i abou had nervous breakdown
we were sitting in the woods about 3 oclock one eveing hunting, was waiting for the tree rats to start running and both of us was sitting with our backs to a couple trees with one between us, all of a sudden we heard a "buzzzzz" sound then POP! it happend so fast and we both immediately knew wat it was, but had no clue where it came from. It was a stray bullet that hit the tree between us. neither of us had heard a gun shot so no clue where it came from, but it sure hit within 2-3' of both of us. we were so rattled we just left.

Yeah, I've only been caught in a lightning storm and once was stranded at the mouth of SW Pass. Greenjeans stopped, called the coast guard for us, checked our catch and licenses, then proceeded to leave us stranded. If you've ever been, you'll know the kind of wake those ships put out

Ice fishing in Montana. We dug the first hole and noticed the ice was barely 3" thick. We walked gently.

I had a scary moment today but don't think I was ever in danger.

Posted it in another thread.

Just had the scare of my life...One of those that make you reevaluate life, employment, religion. Two bears, one chasing the other came out of thick brush at full speed missing me by about 6 feet. They say they can move 35 mph, and I think they were using every single MPH.

quote:

No shite. I was watching a sow and cubs, and they disappeared. Thought that was over and was checking out the salmon when all of a sudden dozens of terrified sockeye came flying down the creek, so I knew a bear was coming. Just didn't know how fast. Holy crap that sow was after a male who got too close to the cubs.

I bent to pick up a squirrel I shot, and caught a glimpse of a rattler about 2 foot away just in time. He died.

A couple come to mind.

Caught in a storm while fishing in Dulac. Stopped to hide under an abandoned camp and lightening stuck about 10 feet away.

My brother shot at a duck over me head not once but twice in the same hunt. Damn near blew out both my eardrums.

One of my buddies sunk the back of the pirogue with me in it in waders. Soft bottom marsh with water at least 6-7 foot deep. I still hold it over his head that he almost killed me.

Frogging my dad picked up a baby gator and put it in the little pirogue we were in. A few minutes later we see these two red eyes in front of us that were very far apart. I might be imagining it, but I swear whatever it was had to be at least 2 feet longer than the pirogue. Put the baby back in the water and backed away verrrrry slowly.

2 seasons ago in NWLA deer hunting.

Strolling through the woods to a stand in the back at 5:30 am, flashlight caught a glimpse of something about 50 ft away, a hog. Turn flashlight to the right, a shitload of hogs right by my trap. I froze, no sidearm, no moonlight, walking backwards slowly.

Literally scared the shite out of me, I went in the woods and sprayed mud, sat on the trail till the sun came up. Walked down and pulled my camera card, I was within reach of 16 hogs....I NEVER walk in the woods without a sidearm now.

Had a 6 point walk within 10 feet of me while squirrel hunting. I had kneeled down and covered my face. He spread his front legs, put his nose to the ground, and started stomping the ground like a bull. I decided to shoot a "squirrel" with 6 shot.

I really can't think of anything

I was fishing on a pond and a big doe jumped out of the woods and ran right at me full speed, turned away about 10 feet from where i was standing

Being from Louisiana I didn't know the danger. But I was with a coworker and his dad that was 65. When a 65 year old that was born one mile from the lake is worried, I worry with him.

Yeah, rule of thumb is don't walk on it with 2" or less, but I don't know a single (sane) person who would trust 2" of ice. I've always heard 4-6"

This wins the "pucker-factor" so far.

Mine was Lake Sommerville., TX. Not a huge lake at all. Squall line was moving in, but I still needed to cross the lake in the flat-bottom Jon Boat to get back to boat ramp. No big deal, right? Hell, I've ran small boats in the open ocean, in storms, you name it....how bad could a lake be?

Holy frick!!! 6ft+ swells...blowing rain hurt the skin through my clothes. Tried to keep the bow into the wind. Wind picked up bow and lifted it straight up, whipped me around and slammed the boat down sideways with only 2 inches of freeboard. Gunned it for a cove and beached the bastard. Rolled boat on side to hide from stinging rain.

Just a lake...

It's kind of a novelty with me. I can think of other outdoor activities I prefer to ice fishing but I do it from time to time with the right company.

Here's a local primer on how to (or not to) ice fish in area lakes. It's a lot of work
