Am I just naive and this is actually pretty common?

I'll admit that I don't know much about moose... but I know F*CKIN'HUGE when I see it!

Picture taken by my roommate's friend in Alaska.

Looks right. Probably a hiking/biking trail. They are everywhere in Anchorage neighborhoods.

Nope. And I would know.

Nope. Standard single-wide gravel/dirt road. They were in a state park in a jeep coming back from fishing some lake.

I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on a bike and have that step out in front of me. Would be a shitty bike seat!

Here is a link that claims to be of the same moose.

LINK

quote:

By the length of his beard and the grey legs, I figure he must be over 10 years old. He looks to be well over 8 feet at the top of the shoulder hump, and with his head up the height to the top of his antler must be about 12 feet. This guy is king of the forest, no bear or pack of wolves would dare come after him when he has this rack. Considering that a dirt road can fit 1 1/2 cars across, this fellow is HUGE. THIS IS ONE BIG BOY!

It is the same moose. My roommate's friend originally put the pictures on his Facebook page along with the story details. He later removed the details because he didn't want to encourage people to go trophy hunting for it. Whoever was sending the email passing along the images got most of it right - just not the location.

Tall moose can stand about 7 feet at the shoulder. Have never seen one taller so that provides some scale.

Trees throw me though because Alaska doen't have pine, except in Muskeg. We have spruce so its difficult to tell where it is.

Probably Kenai. Near the national moose range. They are so common in south central though. Over 200 are killed every year in the mat-su by cars.

It's reasonable that it's not photoshopped. That isn't a full sized road. 7 foot at the shoulders, looks about right.

The moose has no shadow. In both pictures everything is the same but the moose. Photoshopped is what I believe.

Because it's in the shadow of the trees (mostly)

Wrong.

Take a good look at the bottom portion of the 2nd picture on the road - There's different speckles of light on the ground that were not there in the first because the moose was blocking the light.

I'm telling you it's not. I guarantee you that I know more about photoshop and image alteration than 99.5% of this board. If you don't believe me - Do a Google Image search on my screen name...

Trust me...

...if the moose wasn't real - I'd know it. I'd be able to spot the seams, pixel depth variations, etc...

All you guys that shoot archery tournaments, will know about this.... Moving through stations at normal distances, (18-30 yards), shooting deer, turkey, hog targets, and then busting out on a highline and seeing a moose or standing bear at about 50-60 yards will make most new shooters pop them in the kneecaps.. The size of the animal makes it appear much closer than it is.. Hilarious to watch, frustrating to experience..This was much more prevalent back in the days when bows weren't quite as fast, which meant that distance judging was much more important.
