Anyone ever tried catfishing in the Mississippi River? Hell I live right across the street from it, I wouldn't mind trying to catch a big nasty river monster from the bank one afternoon

Hardest part is finding a clear stretch of bank. You'll see what I mean. Depending on the water level you may need either waders or a machete just to get to the bank.

Other than that it can be a lot of fun. Don't waste time throwing to eddies near barges, get out in the current. Throw out as far as you can and use durable bait. I found bacon or cut bait works best. It's absolutely loaded.

Never fished from the bank but used to hang limb lines and trotlines in the willow trees when it's high enough to be on the levee in Laplace. We caught some big arse fonky blues!

What stretch you live near?

Like others have said, if you can actually get to waters edge and cast out, you WILL catch catfish.
Use something meaty and greasy and stays on a hook well.
I've eaten small catfish from the Miss, but I'd throw them big ones back. That's kinda my rule of thumb anywhere with catfish anyway, though.

get the largest, cheapest, nastiest can of dog food you can find, attack it with an ice pick on all surfaces till it oozes, toss it in without the paper wrapping (so you are environmentally correct), come back in an hour and fish down stream from it with cut bait and load up on 'em...

My buddy's FIL makes a living doing it. I don't know any of the specifics of it though. He's shown me videos of em pulling up 50 fish at a time in his nets.

There's an area not more than a half mile from my house where you can drive right up to the sand. Lots of nice catfish in that bend. You can see it looking upriver when you cross the Hale Boggs bridge.

Got a place down the road we call "the point". Nothing but a big stretch of sand with a pond about 50 yards off the levee. Caught many monsters off the bank there.

How is taking a paper (biodegradable)label off of a metal (non-biodegradable) can and throwing it in the water environmentally correct?

We used to ride our four wheelers into the river there.

Real nice hard sand. Not like that down closer to the Jefferson parish line. It's all gumbo mud

come on baw, both are biodegradable, the paper is litter that could float, the can (if you buy the cheap stuff I suggested) will rust away sight unseen at the bottom of the river...

Who the hell would DV a good ole kitty catching thread.

It might make me OB trash, but catfish and bream are my faves when I wet a freshwater hook. Trotlines, bush hooks, jugs, don't matter to me.

And a bull bream on a flyrod is some of the best fun you can have.

Was a party spot at night when I was a teen in the 70's. Small fire, beer taken from dad's fridge, the slut from the neighborhood......good times.

We used to ride the backside of the levee to the luling parade too. can't do that anymore, unless you want to outrun the cops.
