When working in Miami years ago, we made the trip by boat to Bimini and Cat Key numerous times. We were in single hull speed boats and catamarans. Pretty easy trip. Have fun

I've been 60 miles out in the Atlantic on a 25. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to go 50 in a 27 cruiser. As said, weather dependent.

We did it 35 years ago in a 22’ Catalina sailboat, lots of people have crossed the Atlantic in the same boat.

Thanks, y'all. I believe we're gonna take the boat from Orange Beach down to Cape San Blas next weekend to get a feel for it. Probably follow the coast going down, then cut straight across coming back, depending on weather.

To me that's a lot scarier than Miami to Bimini, dodging daily summertime water spouts and electrical storms along the panhandle.

ive seen youtube dudes do it on jetskis.

I’d rather do it on a jet ski than with a lot of larger boats out there. The jet ski is less likely to be put in a situation where it takes a wave the wrong direction and starts to lose functionality and then starts sinking.

I plan on making that trip once I get a little bigger boat with twin engines. Pretty confident my 496 would make it, but i'd be more comfortable having a second to get me back in an emergency

Did the Run hundreds of times..
Everything from a 13,3 Boston Whaler to a 65 Hatteras.
Pick a calm summer morning and head on over.
If you leave out of a busy Port chances are there will be a half dozen boats making the same run on the weekends.
Where I use to dock the go Fast guys would run over for lunch..back by 6...half drunk.
Keep a rod handy..lot's of good weed lines full of everything on the way.

I’ve been looking at the same but on a little smaller boat a 25’ single engine 300 yamaha. Of couse I’ll only do it on great weather and have a contingency for not being able to go. I took my 22’ boat 20 miles out in the GoM with no problem on a good day. I also have no reason to believe my motor will fail on a trip like this bc I keep up with the maintenance no questions. If we decide to go I’ll have the necessary safety equipment and will only go on the ideal days. I’ve seen numerous you tube videos of smaller boats going and have a good friend who went in a 22’ bay boat with a fuel bladder with zero issues. He also went with a group of people he met through the youtube channel. IMO it’s all about weather and having the right stuff for an incident and trying to do buddy boats. We’ll see but if i drag my boat down there and the weather is shite, I’ll find somewhere to go

I have been 50 miles out in a single screw bay boat before and I'm not dead, so it can definitely be done. I dont recommend it this time of year though.

Definitely. We’re planning for the end of next June. That seems to be the time with the best weather patterns

I would probably feel better with 2 engines but in my overly simplistic view, I had about 300 hours on my last engine and necer had a failure. Granted most of those hours were in the GoM but to me dependability is dependability. Hell I put 60-70 miles on the new engine last week. I’ll look for a window of 2-3 days of < 10 mph from the south and preferably SW and go. EPRB, extra fuel, have a VHF, and small emergency life raft.

A Yamaha GPR1800 will go about 110 miles @ 25 MPH on a tank of gas (13 gallons). At wide open throttle 65-67 mph you could go about 65 miles. Most of the modern 4 stroke model PWCs could make it to Bimini on a tank of gas cruising at about 1/2 throttle.

No problem. I just watched a guy and wife go from FL to Bahamas on jet skis.
There is a speed for all seas. Don't be reckless.
And obviously, watch weather patterns

It's so easy to cruise 30 mph and I would imagine easily has 3+ hrs on a tank

Just saw a graph. At "best cruising speed" they all get over 130 miles on a tank.

extra fuel

Cannot see this being an issue. If he cannot go 20 mph, which I imagine is simply breaking/staying on plane in that boat,, he shouldn't leave port.
Not being a dick, just saying, if boat can make trip going as slow as 10-15, on its own fuel, he shouldn't consider
