Just found out my cousin was camping last weekend, came home and found a tick.

Like any of us would do, he pulled it off and went on with his business.

His wife made him go get blood work done as she is a nurse. Come to find out he had Lyme disease.

Just be on the lookout now that our outdoor activities have picked up. Had a friend in high school damn near die of it.

all of ours usually are but what I mean is ticks with lyme disease are "low risk" here

Not downplaying this, just curious of the details because of it

Can be a real bitch to get rid of, even with meds.

Good luck to him.

Lyme is no joke. Good family friend still suffers from this. He got bit over 10 years ago.

If he got bit one week and then blood tested the next week for Lyme's disease he would not show symptoms that quick. It takes a minimum of 30 to 6 months to manifest in your body to a point it is detectable.....he most likely contracted it earlier in the year from possibly other tick bits. just some FYI....not starting a fight here. Just have three different friends that have battled it for years

My land is in a low risk area (Washington Parish). I got a tick on me the first deer i killed but nothing came of it. My MIL got Lyme disease from a tick a couple of years back but caught it early. i have to watch my dog pretty closely even though she is treated

This. I picked up it in 2011. Don't believe the maps. Researchers are just now realizing how prevalent it is. The old theory that it was mostly commonplace in the northeast is fading out. It's in the south, and other regions too. The issue in the south is that people aren't aware of Lyme and their symptoms are frequently misdiagnosed.

I have worked and hunted in the woods since I was a teenager. I cannot begin to estimate how many ticks I have had attached to my person during my career as a forester, working in the woods year round. I have never had a problem.
That said, I have three friends that have gotten Lyme disease from tick bites and they are in the woods only during hunting season. Two were diagnosed very early and are fine, but the third wasn't diagnosed until the disease had gotten established. He has suffered from the disease for the last 15 years at least. Nothing seems to help. It just comes and goes. good days-bad days.

Lyme is a very misunderstood and misdiagnosed so the prevlance in the south is very disputable because the diagnosis is so difficult to do and many will just treat it with antibiotics and go on so to get a positive is rare most wont test and the most accurate test results take a while and you dont want to delay treatment. I know a researcher that worked for Willy Burgdorfer who discovered the bacteria that causes lyme is named Borrelia burgdorferi. The odd thing is the disease was first recognised in and around Lyme Conn and is a north eastern disease, but she did all of her resarch working for Willy Burgdorfer in and around Savanna Ga very odd but we don't have it here in the south? we have deer we have deer ticks deer move people move deer? who knows and deer ticks are small size of a pencil lead the brown dog tick according to the government will not transmit Borrelia burgdorferi but if a deer tick takes a blood meal regurgitates which it does back into the body and the brown tick takes a blood meal also and moves along to another host how are we not protected from this blood born pathogen from the brown tick? if we are safe then we need to know what the hell that brown tick is doing to not transmit Borrelia burgdorferi to us after double dipping with the deer tick.
Tell your doctor you hunt and get bit by ticks and you want keep a bottle of doxycyclin in your first aid kit.

My father is a physician and specializes in Lyme, chronic fatigue, etc. The disease is VERY misunderstood and often rejected. The state of Louisiana will reject it's presence in order to not scare away tourists who want to enjoy our outdoors. It's a shame, really. He has found the disease all over the world and it is very common here in the US.

If you want to learn more about it, look up his book called:

"Conquering Chronic Fatigue" by Jonathan Forester MD.

It's available in E-book and is inexpensive.
