I was told there's someone in South LA that does this and he's very good on price. Anyone know anything about this?

You mean like the whole boat?

Give us a few more details.

Sounds intriguing

Yes I'd like to powder coat the entire boat. It's an 18' custom aluminum flats boat

Hmm.... interesting.

A popular thing these days is to have your leaning post and/or ttop frame powder coated, as opposed to annodized aluminum.

One of the arguments against that is that powder coating is difficult to touch up when it gets scratched.

I wonder how that would work out if you did the entire boat.

By the way, where are you?

Northshore.

You're right about the touch ups but powder coat is extremely durable when done by a quality shop. My race cars had powder coated chassis and I'm pretty sure you could have beaten on them with a hammer.

I don't usually link another forum (and please delete if inappropriate), but this seems like a specialized question, but interesting.

This thread is a little old, but worth reading. Good luck on your project.

They have a place here in ponchatoula called Niko Industries. Pretty sure they advertise doing jobs that big.

I actually haven't taken a picture of the boat yet lol. I will next time I take it out.

And to the poster above, thanks for the rec. What got me wanting to do this was a guy I met at the launch. He had a new aluminum bass boat and he told me a shop quoted him $1300 to powder coat the whole boat. He told me the name of the company but I didn't write it down and I forgot.

I don't really see the point of powder coating aluminum, since aluminum doesn't rust. Also I would think that you would want to be able see a crack in the boat developing,or welds cracking. Powder coat might cover that until it gets bad.

Ya, driven by there a few times. Seen them advertise stuff like that, but not 100%.

Because you have to "bake" the powder on your boat will reach temps of 400-500 in the oven. That means any wood or flotation will catch on fire in those temps and all wiring will have to be redone.

Are you sure you are talking about powder coating and not ceramic coating?

Yep powder coating. I've had many things powder coated over the years and it's a great product. Really holds up well. Ceramic coating is for high temp applications.

It's going to take a big damn oven.

5052 aluminum alloy, which is what most small boats are made of, is not heat treatable. I can't say for sure, but the baking process may alter the mechanical properties of the base metal and weld metal.

I don’t recommend painting or coating the aluminum. It will last longer if left bare because bare aluminum represents a large surface area that will corrode very slowly but uniformly. If you coat it, scratches will expose a relatively small aluminum area and corrosion will proceed fairly rapidly in these areas.
