Is a Winchester 70 too much for a "starter" rifle?

30.06 is not an inexpensive round.

I just picked up a marlin, think its an XL-7, in 25-06. It was used, paid $225, new they run about $300. I put a redfield revenge scope on it. $375 total in it. Plus redfield has a $40 mail in rebate right now on the revenge scopes. This rifle also comes in other calibers.

Sorry about the lack of info. I dont post on this board a lot. Also, you guys are awesome. And Im def. gona post the pics once I get the rifle.

The purpose of the rifle would mainly be for target shooting.

For target shooting you won't get a more accurate out the box rifle than a used tikka. The out the box accuracy is nothing short of incredible for a rifle that retails for about $650. They can be found used rather easily, or at least they used to. I've shot somewhere around a dozen different tikka T3's and EVERY SINGLE ONE shot 1" or better groups at 100 yards. 3 of them were 1/2" or better guns. The thing that the tikka lacks for a target gun is weight. The T3 is extremely light and it has recoil like you would expect from something that light. They're not fun to shoot in big calibers.

If you just want a fun gun the mosin is definitely not a bad choice, but as a general rule semi auto's are much more fun to shoot than hard kicking bolt actions unless you wanna do the long range thing.

For target shooting, why not get a 22?

Damn good point. Plus you could build a badass .22 for his budget.

Winchester says that guns and ammo will be available to consumers in local gun shops and sporting goods stores by April 2013.

True, nowdays NOTHING is inexpensive. OTOH, a box of non-premium 30-06 costs much less than do the newer short mags or the older mags.

Man, I completely forgot about the Marlin Model 7. I bought one a few years ago as a "camp gun" or loaner. Including an inexpensive Pentax scope, nice Burris rings and Weaver base, I've got much less than $400 in it. It shoots sub MOA w/ 2 different factory loads.
