Looking for a "Woods Rifle" - Caliber?

I have a Browning 7 Mag that I love, but the last couple years we have been hunting more in the woods out of ladder stands. The 7 Mag is money in the food plots out of a box stand, but its a little bulky and a little much for the woods. I am looking for something I can whip around fairly quickly and put the scope on a moving deer before it crosses the lane. For most of our shots in the woods, the deer are moving from bedding to the acorn flats, so we don't have much time.
I am definitely sticking with Browning, I really like their products. I was thinking about a 30-06 just because that is the best all purpose gun, but being that I already have a 7 Mag, should I go for a lower caliber? What else would do the job? .270, .243? All shots would be under 100 yds, most in the 40-75 range. I still want enought power to get them down. I even thought about a shotgun, but I don't want to be limited in case Mr. Big walks out at 50 yards.
What do yall think?

30-30 lever action. Can't beat it for woods.

35 whelen in Handi rifle. Then he's ready for primitive season. Can't go wrong.

A shotgun with a slug barrel will reach out to 100yds no problem

This. Check for legality in the State you're in first.

Blow/snort at him and stop him. Then it doesn't matter. Snap shots where you aren't certain should not be taken. Ever.

35 Rem is a good caliber as well

First, you don't need another rifle. Second if you still insist, get a lever action and don't put a scope on it.

slinger,
I don't know whether you have a BLR, BAR or Browning bolt action, I'm going to assume it's the latter. I'd suggest a short action bolt action, either in 7-08 or 308, w/ a 22" or shorter if available. Of course, a comparable long action (e.g. 270, 280 Rem or 30-06 would work also, but a short action might be more handy).
OTOH, if you decide you want to change actions/guns, a lever action carbine in 30-30 Win or 35 Rem would be perfectly capable. 444 Marlin or 45/70 lever action would also do the job, but w/ a lot more recoil and no increase in performance.

I started hunting with my 45-70 last season all year long in the woods. I love that damn gun.

This thread screams 30-30 only irons.

I am shocked that .35 Whelan is actually a primitive weapon caliber, because it's a freakin' hoss. I would hop on it. You'll get a lot of drop at ranges like 200 yards, but you can still make the shot.
