I recently bought a boat and I have been planning my first trip out. I'd like to chase a few specs and looking for recommendations for my first trip alone or maybe with a friend. I see a few people are catching them on plastics near the train bridge in lake p. Would this be a relatively easy trip for a first time out in this boat? Any other areas recommended? I've been fishing many times in Grand Isle, Cocodrie, and Dularge but not ready to go there on my own yet.

train bridge in lake p

Easy to get to if you want to run the boat. Fishing there takes some skill with the heavy jig head on the bottom method. Going to be very crowded. You could always run into Lake Catherine from there if you aren't doing much and try the marsh a bit. Fun way to spend the day and would be doable for first trip. Keep an eye on the wind. I wouldn't want to be in Lake P chop with a smaller boat.

Get some live shrimp and fish the MRGO. Easy as it gets.

Go to Delacroix. Live shrimp and you should not have to run far...

Do you have a bay boat or boat with a deeper draft and high walls? The reason I ask is because Lake P can get pretty rough around this time of year. If launching out of the north shore I recommend using the Rigolets Marina and fish the marsh in the Rigolets, Lake St. Catherine, CSX Rail Pass. If the wind is light and conditions are right, fish Chef Pass, Lake Borgne Marsh, and rigs in Lake B.

Live shrimp works best bottom or corked, but jig heads and plastics work well too.

To answer your question about it being a good/easy trip for your first time in the Lake, I would have to say no. Lake P can be a real bitch sometimes.
