Looking for a new .22 for my dad

What should I get him? Ruger 10/22? Savage Mark II?
I think he may like a bolt action 22 better than a semi, but that's just a guess.
ETA: and any scope recommendations? Total budget for gun, scope under $500.

As much as I love a little 10/22, I hate loading the damn magazines.
I much prefer something like my old Marlin Model 60 with the tide magazine on the bottom of the barrel.
That's about all I got. I'm sure he'll be happy with whatever you choose.

what's he going to use it for?
for straight up fun shooting it's hard to beat an M&P 15-22

I am going against the masses here, but I would buy him a Remington speedmaster. I'm not a fan of Remington, wouldn't buy any of their other guns. But the speedmaster are great. You can shoot anything out of them and they have a classic look to them. Much more suited for a gift to dad, imo.

A bunch of great suggestions here. I have several of the ones mentioned and my favorite shooting is probably my 15-22.
After that my dad's Browning A-22 is probably the best .22 ever made. Not sure it's in your price range though.
I really depends on what your wanting

Get him a Henry .22 with the octagon barrel. I got one about 5 years ago and my dad thought I was crazy for spending that much on a .22. Now every time we go shoot he asks me before we leave if I brought it. It is a very fun gun to shoot.

Love my golden boy. Very fun to shoot and it's a beautiful rifle.

You can get the traditional blued Henry plus a scope and meet your budget. There is something about that cowboy style lever action that my dad loves. I even bought the youth version for my boy as a training rifle. The action really forces a kid to slow down and go through all of the motions prior to every shot. We love them.

The regular Henry's are very nice and cheap

Ruger has a tacticool .22, as well. It uses 10/22 magazines - so if you already hate them...
