I have a custom 300 win mag arriving tomorrow. Supposed to be a shooter....

Anyway, I've been researching scopes. I want to stay in the $700-$1000 range. Looking at:

Vortex Viper pst
Sightron Siii
SWFA ss
Zeiss conquest
Nightforce shv
Bushnell elite

Any experience with these?
Any scopes you recommend?

I could be talked into 16 max magnification, but Im considering 20 or 24/25 max for long range target shooting.

What say the boys of the OB?

I've got a Viper and a conquest I may be willing to part with, both still new in the box.

What are you calling long range?

For 1,000yd plus shots which your gun can do you would be better to save up another 1,000 and get what you want. Last place to skimp on long range shooting is the scope IMO.

ETA: if you forced me into one of the above I would pick the nightforce or the Conquest.

I let Kevin Rayhill of Stockade put it together.

It took forever.

I sent him savage action, timney trigger, accuracy international bottom metal, bartlien barrel 26", custom lug and custom tactical bolt handle.

He put it together and put on his own custom muzzle brake. Put on his coyote thumbhole stock. Blueprinted, etc.

Hammer,
Im torn. Because I know I could go nightforce nxs or S&b.......
But this is a hunting rifle and those scopes are heavy af!!

Of the ones I listed, they are 24-27 ounces range.

War Tiger, yes weight is a factor but it cricles back to how long are you planning on shooting? What is long range to you that varies for people.

If I am going to shoot at an animal over 800 yards I am going to have a scope that I can easily adjust with both the reticle and turrets and have a lot of faith in. If 400 yards is your goal any of the above scopes can do it.

I hunt with a bench gun most of the time, it's heavy but hunting around here it's mostly ride a 4 wheeler and walk 100 yards to the stand weight doesn't much matter in that case.

Out west I use a hunting rifle and the rifle is lighter but still have a Kahles that's heavy on it.

Where do you live?
Im in Utah. Hunting Utah and Idaho.

I killed at 660 yards last year with a viper 4-16x50. I won't shoot over 800 at an animal unless I get more time behind better glass.

I want to target shoot at 800-1200 yards.

Lets say my current max hunting shot is 800.

Da Hammer giving good advice.

Out of those listed im taking a Bushnell LRHS or Nightforce SHV.

Not digging the PST in this situation, the turrets dont lock and could be moved while walking/moving.

If you like Vortex, check out the Razor LH. It would be more appropriate to a hunting rifle.

I've done a ton of research on longrangehunting and snipershide.
Everything Ive read is that the Sightron siii will do everything I need and more.

Im no stranger to dropping cash on hunting projects....just trying to be practical.

How do you feel comfortable shooting at an animal at that range when you acknowledge you don't have the equipment or skill set to do so?

Have you hunted with that meopta?

I had one on my tikka .308 during mule deer season. It got exposed to a rain shower while hiking the trails and it took precipitation inside the glass. Ruined a shot at a decent buck.

I took meopta off my list because of that personal experience......

Ive shot more than a couple deer in the 300 to 350 yd range with a 270 and a quality 3x9.

Its more about trigger time than anything, also the OP didnt state the equipment he used for that shot or his shooting level.
