Just rereading through this. Had quite a bit of charter last night and wasn't very clear in my point. I have shot out to 500 yards on 2 occasions at animals. But I shoot those distances at the range. There are folks who do it in hunting situations regularly. But that wasn't the issue in this thread. It was beyond 500, and in the OP, 500-750 yards. I understand he was talking about just shooting for the fun of it. I made the hunting inference that he was attempting to hunt that far, which he never implied. I blame that on the charter.

The number of folks who can accurately kill animals beyond 500 yards is infinitely small. Yes, there are folks who can do it. Yes, there are folks who do, do it. But there are wayyyyy more folks who "think" they can do it, who have never tried, and who wouldn't come close. I am not insinuating that is anyone in this thread. But I see too many guys who shoot a 1 1/2" group at 100 yards off a bench who think that is great. And , for 99% of hunting situations, it is, and more than adequate to efficiently and ethically put down an animal. But that's not what we're talking about.

On the "off the shelf" rifles....there certainly are rifles, off the shelf, that you can buy and long range shoot very accurately. You aren't buying those at Walmart....let me clear that up also by saying you aren't buying them and shooting them as they come off the shelf. You can put the work into them to get them to that point though. I took it in my half drunken state as "take it off the shelf, buy a box of core lokts, and start shooting". That obviously wasn't the intention.

As you know, there is a TON that goes into long range shooting. Not only practice, but proper break in of rifles, triggers, bedding...all that kind of crap...but also building rounds that are the best for YOUR gun by not just shooting reloads, by micing chambers and what not, optics, etc, etc. There are so few people that do this sort of thing, that my default reply is to simply laugh and say "sure you can".

So I hope I did a better job of explaining what I meant this morning. I certainly don't doubt there are those of you on here who can do it accurately in a hunting situation. But I think we'd agree that 99% of the folks who pick up a hunting rifle and go sit on a power line would be using pure luck to hit a deer at 500 yards much less beyond that....and not that there's is anything wrong with those hunters. Just the vast majority never need to do it, and thus, can't. As I've gotten older, I know I've certainly reigned in my "need" to reach out and touch them. Cause while my rifle will cut holes at 300, I don't bring that lead sled in the stand with me, and I've got an awful coffee habit.

I can't see the damn target past a few hundred yards without a scope
nearly every rifle made is more capable than the shooter
ringing a gong out to 5 or 600 yards is an art, not luck

If you cross your eyes, it helps you see distances better. Something about the focus and all of those optometrist terms, but it works.

We shoot that .17 bmag at 4-450. 500 yards with a 30 caliber shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I have a 300wsm Remington 700 in an HS stock, that is bedded. I feel the rifle deserves to apart be shot once beyond my topical 300 yards.

I don't know that I would ever try to take an animal (obvious exception being pigs), without a lot (200-500 rounds) at beyond 500 yards.

Just really wanting to stretch out the ole rifle and have a little fun.

I found some Federal Ultramatch this morning, and am gonna go stock up again. shite is hard to find, even online. Oddly, my CZ shoots Thunderbolts the second best out of any ammo (which makes me happy when plinking). I've tried probably 15 different types of 22 ammo, and those two group the best.

Furthest I've spent a good deal of time shooting my 22 at is 100.

Shooting a .22 at any real distance is an art.

I love sitting at 220 yards and seeing what I can hit consistently with an old simmons 4 power.

My boss and a co-worker went to his property last year to sling .22 lead. Was an absolute blast to see how far we could shoot them. Furthest we stretched out to was 140yds. We were hitting skeet with somewhat regularity at that range.

They are moving pretty damn slowly out that far. If I had a spot to shoot 100+ all of the time, I would. Just dropped $99 on 250rds of 22

If you're in BR that's crazy.

There is .22 all over if you're willing to look.

Federal Ultramatch. Cheapest I've seen them in the past 10 years is $15/box of 50. Cheapest online right now is like $16/box + shipping, and that actually ends up costing more than what I paid today from the store. They are the best 22 round I have found for my gun so far. Pretty much stopped searching after about 150 down the pipe.

90% of the "match" grade stuff will get me like 3-8" groups at 50 yards. That's like watching JJ throw passes. Thunderbolts shoot better than almost everything....consistently

Automatic is not the same as ultramatch.

Should check out some of the eley ammo. I have some and it's pretty good.

I've shot the NRA HighPower matches at 600 yds before. The matches call for iron sights that can be adjusted as you said, by a set number of "clicks". I've never tried to shoot those distances with a scope but I'm thinking the average hunting scope wouldn't work well if you have to adjust for different distances.

You're right about other factors. We also shouldn't forget about temperature, humidity, wind direction, wind speed, etc. Long range target shooters figure all this into their shooting. BTW, a target center as large as a refrigerator looks like a dot with the naked eye at 600 yds.

I've shot my share of steel at 600yds, and i can't imagine trying to shoot a deer at that distance. I was very happy to hit the 24" plate.

People dont realize how far that is.

Eley Match was pretty nasty. Tenex was a little better, but Thunderbolts patterned better than both. Pretty odd, but I've shot probably 500 Thunderbolts and 300 Ultramatches and they work the best for my gun. I've got to adjust the elevation when switching...even at 50 yards.

Already tried almost everything from:

Aguila
RWS
CCI
Eley
Wolf
Remington
Federal
Winchester
Maybe one or two more. Only thing left out is Lapua
