Probably a little pricey...

Get a big dozer with a wedge blade to push down the trees.
Burn the pile after
Hire a land leveling company to level the property.
Dozer is $1100 per day
Land leveling $800 per day
Right dozer worker can clear an acre per day and a half
Land leveling 2-4 days total

The guys we used were significantly cheaper and worked much faster, even with a big D5

If we keep arguing about this we can all chip in and bet on how long it takes. Coco could book the bets and make money to pay the cost on the vig alone.

You can always do what my grandfather did with my dad/uncles when they were youngsters. Tell them to grab some shovel/axes/pickaxes, throw them a case of dynamite and say have at it. There is a fresh 200 acre pasture we just cleared, yal get a dollar a day.

OP thought about talking to logging companies at all? Of course it's only 10 yr old trees so they may have no interest but I know of people having logging company come in and pay them a little for all their timber. Then you have mostly cleared land.

Land leveling is $800/day?
With an 8 wheel and 14-18 yard bucket you're looking at $200/hr at least

I'm thinking I need to get out of engineering and just buy me a dozer. For $85-125/hr, it is tempting. The shite isn't hard. On a normal schedule with one dozer, that's like $150k per year minus probably $15-20k in fuel. FML
When it was needed, I used to run a dozer, an excavator, a motor grader, and sometimes a skidder for $12.50/hr

Sell the timber for pulp wood. You might not get much but you will only have to deal with the stumps.
On the larger stumps gut a hole in the middle, fill with diesel, and burn.
The smaller stumps pull them up with a front end loader, pile them up, and burn.
This is what we did several years back when we were helping family convert 26 acres into pasture to go along with 26 acres already pasture.
We used T-post spaced about 10-12ft apart with 4 strands of wire.

use a stump grinder (sounds expensive),
Nah...Chainsaw pie-wedge type cuts in the top and build a little Tee-Pee fire on top. Stump will burn down 100% in a day or two, and will then continue to burn underground for a week.
Here's the closest thing I can find resembling what I do...

10 year old woods. Buy a backhoe and just dig the trees up, push and burn. I bought a 580C extender hoe for 7K and dropped another $600 for some maintence. Fell big Oka trees that were more then 36" with it. Once down, chain saw it up, save good parts for firewood, pile up rest to burn.
10 year old trees should be around 12".

Realistically, with time and some helping hands this could be done with decent tractor and with a front end loader or backhoe attachment.
Is it woods or just overgrown with some trees in it?

one of the pieces of land i was looking at is just overgrown with some trees on it. i'm not ready to buy anything yet, i just want to have a good handle on the work involved for anything i buy. what i don't want to do is buy a piece of overgrown land and then realize, shite, i need another 30K to even start doing what i want to do with the land. i just need to know up front what it's going to take.
Posted on 4/2/14 at 1:48 pm to gorillacoco
By overgrown you can still run a bush hog over a good bit of it?
Posted on 4/2/14 at 2:09 pm to GREENHEAD22
Nah, lots of forearm sized saplings
Posted on 4/2/14 at 2:37 pm to gorillacoco
Oh shite, just rent a dozer and push it all over. Pulp has to be bigger than 16ft for the mill to take. That wouldn't take long at all
