We're heading to Lake Chicot this weekend to camp and do some kayak fishing. This is a new lake for all of us going. And to be honest, none of us are very experienced fishing fresh water lakes. Primarily fish brackish waters.

What should we focus on catching?
What bait should we use?
What section of the lake is best to fish?
Do trout lines, yoyo's, or jug lines work well out there?

Bonus: Were also going to camp at the primitive camp sites that you kayak to. If anyone has experience with that, advice would be helpful too.

I grew up fishing Chicot with my pawpaw. There are a few species to target. First, you can bass fish out there and use just about anything. It's early in the season. Try a spinner bait. If that's not working go to a Texas or Carolina rigged plastic set up.

If you are more interested in Sac-a-lait, go with the old standard jig pole with a fly and a piece of worm. Shad on a hook will work well also.

Work the Cypress stumps (there are a lot) Chicot actually means stump. Good luck and have fun.

Bass - pitch soft plastics by the shallow trees, or frog over duck weed.

Perch - jig about 15" under cork by any tree until you figure out what type they are on. Should be shallow.

Carolina rig at Chicot? Where exactly are you doing this at

Pitch a jig, bandit crank bait banged off the stumps and trees works as well as creature baits. place is tough but there are some good ones in there.

Ive never caught shite so the first thing is be prepared not to catch anything. 2nd is make sure to be careful because there are tons of underwater stumps to frick up your boat.

I didn't realize Chicot had these, I thought all there primative spots were hike-in spots. Post up on Monday, pretty interested to hear your experience.

Won a tournament there with Senkos and Horny Toads. Also OL Monster worms and Jigs work good. Saw a guy catch a 10+ pounder on a watermelon jig at the base of a big tree. Always pitch your bait to the tree trunk even if it slides down the tree.
Horny Toads work best doing that. Watermelon red or Junebug.

Chicot is not exactly an ideal lake for carolina rigs but whatever you say.

All the sites are fairly close to the lake. Some are right on it. You could kayak to anyone of them I believe the one on the east side would be the longest walk from the water but still not bad at all.

Should be a good weekend. Mosquitoes were almost unbearable in late September when I went. I would bring thermacell even now.

The only thing I've ever had success with at Chicot (for bass) is:

Jig n pig - black/blue or watermelon
Spro bronzeye frog
Spinnerbait - White/Chart or shiner color
Tx rig lizard weightless - black/blue or cotton candy.

As other have said, base of the cypress trees or any grass mat you can find. The Branch is a popular area to fish. There's also an area slightly north of the south launch with a bunch of trees smack in the middle of the lake. Had decent luck there.

Can't help you much with the crappie.

I went and ran yoyos last weekend. The gators are already out and will eat your fish. It was pretty slow the night we went. Only caught about a dozen sacs
