Young copperheads have the same yellow tail. But their patterns are a little different. It's a little more jagged on a cottonmouth.

I'm pretty sure it was a copperhead. I was disappointed that I haven't seen my king snakes in the yard lately. They're slacking.

They look very similar when young, but this is a cottonmouth.
