I'm probably going to take my kayak to the gulf with me in late July. The only fishing I've really done down there is throwing sand fleas for pompano, which consisted of catching mostly catfish and sharks and the rare pompano. Anyway, I'm just trying to get an idea of how and what to fish for. I like the idea of fishing the boat canals for flounder or something. That seems a little more akin to the type of fishing I'm accustomed to doing. But, I'm not opposed to going out beyond the sandbars, if you guys don't think I'll drown in my little Field and Stream yak.

Anyway, just looking for tips and experiences. And, I'd especially like to hear from anyone that has done any yak fishing in mexico beach.

I'd take it down to St Joe bay to fish for specs, reds, and flounder. You may be able to get some Spanish macks out of Mexico beach too.

I'd talk to Tom Putnam at Half Hitch or Brad Stephens at SunJammers in Panama City or Nate Odum at Mexico Beach Marina any of them will steer you in the right direction.

Use my name if you want. All of them are friends/acquaintances and know the area well

Go out on Cape San Blas. There's a boat ramp in the park on the bay side.

Launch at lighthouse bayou. There is a kayak launch there with parking and everything. It's at the very corner of Cape San Blas. The road will turn back toward Mexico Beach and there will be a rock wall on the gulf side, it's across from there.

Lots and lots of grass flat areas, look for the holes in the grass from old bombing runs. Be wary of the tides or you could be doing a lot of dragging the kayak.

There is also a decent place right off Mexico beach with some flats. There and the area in front of the marina.

The bay is loaded with sharks so be careful if you're wade fishing. I had a 6-7ft bull shark bust mullet about 10 feet in front of me.

Lighthouse bayou and the other place I mentioned

ETA: there is also crooked island sound that is on the base. They have a hidden road to a launch here.
Crooked island sound

Awesome. Thanks for the info, everyone. I'd looked at some of these places on google maps. The majority of my time is going to spent right in Mexico Beach with the fam, but hopefully I can manage to drive to a couple of spots before we leave.

This...plus you might take it down to Indian Pass or Apalachicola Bay.

Also, don't shy away from the freshwater fishing in that area. You could head up to Dead Lakes (~15 miles north of Mexico Beach) and wear out some monster gills.

Y'all are getting me excited. My wife might divorce me after I spend our entire vacation fishing by myself.

Go to St Joe your first or second day. Mexico beach is like the beach, the cape is a peninsula as you know. The bay is completely different from the beach, it's a legit bay with all kinds of wildlife. They get a good bit of triple tail in that area so if you see anything floating be ready with a live shrimp or imitation lure.

It should also be scallop season. You may want to check that out. I haven't seen the dates yet but it usually starts the first of july.

Most definitely go to Bluewater Outriggers in Port St Joe......one of the most well stocked stores you will ever walk in and the decor is worth the trip alone.

Whole staff there is very knowledgeable about the entire area

George also owns the local Piggly Wiggly for your food and beverage needs
