Had a 5 day hunt starting last thursday and we limited out. Im sick to my stomach tho because I let the biggest deer of my life walk because I got greedy. The 1st day, 1st hunt, 1st 45min into that hunt and 1st deer i see. I hear him jump the fence to my right and he walked into a thicket. I seen his horns thru my scope, but it was alittle fogged. He pushed a doe out of the thicket and was about 40yds infront of me. I raised my scope again, seen he was a main beam 8pt, about 8" G2's. I was sent pictures prior to the hunt with some MONSTER bucks on it, i mean 150+ beasts. So I decided in my head that I was going to pass and wait because I didnt want to blow my load on the 1st buck I seen with 5 more days to hunt. Well, i put my gun down, he pushed the doe closer to me. He got within 15 yds and I seen the G2 had a kicker off the back and the right main beam had a drop tine on it that split... which now this 8 pt turned into an 11pt. He walked right by my stand staring at me the whole time and the doe caught wind and they bolted..... I hunted the next 4 days, ALLDAY in -2 degree weather to try and see him and he never came back. Was probably the best/worst hunt of my life.

Just curious if you guys had ever made a decision like this.... I guess I got greedy wanting a main beam 10pt and seeing all those pics made me pass. Lesson learned.... if you'd shoot it on the last day...shoot him on the 1st!!

I did the same thing in Kansas a few years back on a bow hunt. I passed a solid main frame 8 on the first evening of a 7 day hunt. I had him at 8 yards. The weather flipped and I didn't get another chance the rest of the week. Sucks!

Rule 1 on a trip like that: Never pass up a buck on the first day that you would shoot on the last day.

Conversely:

Never shoot a buck on the last day of the season that you passed up on (due to size/age) on the first day of the season

i go on hunts every year to kentucky or ohio... and i dream of that happening to me! I always say if a good buck comes out day one i wana shoot it soon as possible and get it out the way! Then i can sit at camp and relax with no pressure, knowing i have my buck. Then hunt my 2 does without any pressure.

sorry you were greedy lol

believe me bud, it will NEVER happen again. One of my buddies did something similar on the same morning. He shot a nice 8pt about 20min after I seen this one. About 10min after he shot.... a 140 class 10pt walked up and made a scrape right next to the dead 8pt... all he could do was video it.

ETA: I just had these pics of those massive bucks in my head and was thinking, "if this is the 1st buck i see, imagine what else is out there" well come to find out...not a fkn thing

Happened to me before, passed on a 120+ buck on a low fence East Texas ranch because "I had one that big on camera on my lease" I ended up taking a smaller 8...

did the exact same thing on a Canadian hunt in 32 below zero weather .1st morning, 15 minutes after daylight. I filmed him, but didn't kill him. The 12 pt I killed on last day wasn't nearly as good as the 1st I saw.. oh well...

What part of Missouri were you in? Just got back Monday from a 6 day trip myself and didn't have any luck getting one on the ground.

I've heard people doing that. If you think it's an 8 point, gotta take what you can get and take it down.

I am headed to Alberta Friday, I'm not traveling all the way there to shoot a marginal buck. I have in my mind the minimum of what I want to shoot and I will stick with it. The outfitter told me to expect mid 160s so anything over that is a bonus.

So you'd travel all the way over there to not shoot anything at all and not take home any meat?
