That those of you on this board recommend? This will be my first season hunting with a bow. I shoot a Matthews Bow and will be hunting in wood where most shots will be around 20-30 yards.

Every broad head will kill deer - I would go with tried and true versus new to market broad heads personally. Killed deer and hogs with NAP thunderheads and NAP Spitfire. Buddy kills them regularly with Muzzy - any major brand that has been around awhile has lasted for a reason.

Real question for you is fixed blade or mechanical

I used to shoot a Thunderhead 100 grain from 93-08ish. I've shot Muzzy 100 since.

I have never shot a mechanical broadhead. I get the larger cutting diameter, but don't like moving parts on my arrow. I also don't shoot a whiskey biscuit, as I don't like the idea of my fletchings touch another component of the bow in flight.

Maybe I'm the crazy one. Who knows?

Grim Reaper 2" Whitetail Special- they ain't just whistling Dixie when they say "Watch'em drop". It's nice not have to blood trail a deer.

I'll second the reapers. If you're shooting 65+ of kenetic energy then use the whitetail specials 2". Even with the 1 3/8" I've had deer expire with blood trails that look like a scene from a scary movie. Haven't had one break or fail to open yet. They for sure have earned their spot in the quiver.

I shoot a rage classic 2 blade in hardwoods and a muzzy in pine thickets/cut overs.

The rage is incredibly destructive.

Grim reaper whitetail special 2". You won't have an easier blood trail after using these.

Another vote for grim reapers. I shot G5 montecs for a few years but I didn't like the way they fly. They always had a little rise to them in flight. So I decided to try out the grim reapers and they fly exactly like field points and leave a ridiculous blood trail.

They are pretty much all solid, and shot placement is by far the most important thing. That being said, I have seen Ramcat broadheads devastate an elk scapula and penetrate to the fletching on a quarter to shot.
