Dogs as we know them were bred from wolves or possibly the ancestors of modern wolves way back in the gap. Way way back. All the breeds we know now are the result of human breeding over millennia. Artificial selection if you will.


I didn't read the thread, just the OP, so I assume this has been covered.

IIRC - It took an average of 7 generations to "domesticate" the foxes.

I seriously doubt that records have been kept long enough to reliably determine the origon of what is known as domesticated breeds.before the settlers arrived. We do know that the. Hound breeds
were brought to the United States primarilarily from Britan and France.. maybe someone can tell us what breeds were here when the settlers arrived. we must be careful not to accept theory as fact.

Wait...what? Are you wondering if there were "breeds" in North America before white man? I guess I just don't get what you're saying here.
