In a nutshell whats the difference between .223 and 5.56?

5.56 is higher pressure.

You can shoot a .223 in a 5.56 but not the other way around.

Ammo or chamber specs? 5.56 NATO usually runs slightly thicker brass so case capacity is slightly less. 5.56 chambers often are cut for a longer freebore and leade for cycling reliability under adverse conditions.
