re: If you had to shoot a deer with an AR....

FWIW, my first deer rifle was a mini-14. Shot nothing but .223 55gr in it. Wouldn't have had it any other way. Definitely learned shot placement....and, yes, a little blood trailing every now and then. Just my two cents.

I just used plain ball ammo (55 grain?).
Under 40 yards
...head shot on any size deer
---Facing me = No shoot
---Oblique towards me = Aim for Eyeball
---Oblique away = Rear edge of ear behind earhole opening
---Profile = a little below a straight line drawn between eye and ear hole
---Facing away = Base of skull
Beyond 40 is where it gets tricky.
Small to medium deer
Out to 75...maybe 100 yds,: hit the thick part of the shoulder muscle and the bullet will tend to keyhole when exiting the other shoulder (can mess up some meat, but oh well).
Do not hit the chest cavity...round will just drill a little hole right through.
The couple times I tried soft points, I had poor results. But that was 20 years ago and bullet design has greatly evolved since then.
Avoid brush, grass, small limbs at all costs for obvious reasons.
I don't know how 5.56 would perform on a deer shoulder beyond 100 yds...never tried it, and wouldn't trust it.

Barnes TSX if you're forced to use .223/5.56. Very uniform expansion with a better chance of a clean exit compared to a tumbling/fragmenting ball round.

62gr barnes ttsx. Barnes bullets are bad to the bone!!!
I am getting ready to start loading for .300 blackout.

Got to make one hunt with her in January- unfortunately the result was a wounded 120 class 8 pt. in Alabama's Black Belt.
Not a poor reflection on the round, or weapon, let me just say that if you decide to shoot whilst they are copulating, the front flank skin looks an awful lot like real shoulder in the mounted position. Bullet went right through.

I know a girl that shot several does out to 100 yards with regular Greenbox loads. When my son was very young , he used a mini 14 loaded with Federal 55 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws out to 50 yards. I don't know what kind of bullets are available with all the ammo hoarding.

When I shoot deer with my AR-15 I use Hornady TAP ammo. It's extremly accurate (I can put 3 shots in a quarter @ 100 yards with it). So, I'm very comfortable with it. I normally shoot at the base of the skull. Haven't lost one yet.

I really really really want to drop a doe with a head shot.

I really really really want to drop a doe with a head shot.
Of course, be at an appropriate distance.
West of Houston where deer are not as skittish:
They move their head up and down quite a bit, so you need to aim about where the head will be when they're looking around. When ready, I make a "click" sound with my mouth. Deer will raise head back up and hold it still for a second...take the shot.
North of Houston where any sound will make a deer bolt:
Deer in the area are like large dobermans amped-up on meth. Much tougher shot. Usually have to catch them with their head down eating or do a shoulder shot.

Not currently, been sitting on it since November/December and it seems absurdly scarce these days. Plus I should be getting my SBR stamp any day
