I buy all my gun gear and hunting gear almost exclusively from Amazon because I love the prime shipping. But this is annoying.

Amazon to start collecting sales tax for Louisiana buyers

But then this comment at the bottom, which I don't understand fully:

quote:

This is such a long article to not have the full story. Only Amazon shipments that are referred by Louisiana based Sales Associates are subject to the tax. Amazon has annouced that they are dismissing all Louisiana Sales Associates. You can figure the rest. Much ado about nothing.

But if they start trying to collect sales tax I'm off to other websites.

I don't understand how our state can have some of the highest sales tax rates in the country and our government is still hundreds of millions short on the budget. How could they possibly not trim the fat somewhere else rather than bleeding the citizens dry?

For a state the size of Louisiana, we have too many government employees.

The state's constitution protects most of the budget and can not be cut. That is why health and education get cut, that is the only thing they can really cut. Have you noticed on the ballot of most elections, there is anther revenue stream being guaranteed by a vote?

Yep. It sucks. If they collect state and local taxes in my parish, we are looking at a 10.5% hit.

I'll still use Amazon, but I will definitely shop around more. Sadly though, I knew the tax free days would end eventually.

They've started it already in Alabama. Sadly I knew this day would come.

Don't lie to yourself. Even if they do start adding tax you still can't beat Amazon's prices and prime.

It's the government. No amount will ever be enough with the crooked politicians we have today. IMO that is the reason Trump got elected. People are done with politicians.

Alabama started requiring them to collect it last month. I really haven't changed my buying habbits any, the items I have shopped around, the shipping at other sites was more than the tax at Amazon.

I have noticed that if you purchase through Other Sellers, even if it is shipped by Amazon, they don't charge tax.

As someone who deals with government regulators on a daily basis, this is the absolute truth. I wouldn't complain if the 10 government employees did the work of 10 private sector employees. But when they do the same amount of work as 4 private sector workers, there is a problem.

Now, many agencies are allowing their workers to "telecommute" (work from home). Them sumbitches don't work at their office, how much work do you think they do at home watching pornhub and drinking whiskey right before they leave at 2pm to go sit on a deerstand?

Obviously if their low price plus tax is still lower than other sites it'll be purely an economic decision. But I've seen competitive prices on other sites but use Amazon for the prime shipping. I'll go back to those other sites depending on the price.

Good to know.

I imagine Amazon will see a drop in sales in those states. I agree that people are sick of politicians and taxes. You can't tax your society into prosperity. Eventually people will get sick of that crap.

You might not know this, but the state requires you to pay taxes at the end of the year for any and all online purchases, it is just that no one does it...

So you are admitting to trying to find ways to not pay sales tax, then complain about the government being broke because of lack of taxes?

Yeah, you've always "had" to pay taxes on Amazon purchases. They just never ventured to collect it personally.

I already have over 1/3 of my paycheck taken from me for income tax, medicare, and social security, all of which is money that I will never see or even smell again.

I don't see how taking a large chunk of the money from productive citizens isn't enough to sustain our state government. Wealth redistribution does not work and will never work.

People will always avoid paying taxes, period. They also will avoid taxes that do not directly benefit them. I highly doubt I have received as much assistance from my local government as I've paid into the system.

Guess what boss, this isn't the reason the government is broke.

The State's trend is analogous to you getting a 5% raise at your job every year, then being 6% more in debt personally every year. Our government, from the municipality level to federal level, has a spending problem. The people holding the purse strings spend with no consequence other than losing re-election. Yet when they are utilizing the tax moneys for the purpose of pandering to groups for votes, the threat of losing re-election diminishes.

It amazes me how many people are mad about not being able to continue to break the law, and then announce it to everyone.

When legislators start allocating funds to benefit those who actually pay the taxes in proportion to supplementing those who don't, then I'll consider it breaking the law. Right now I'm being stolen from.
