There may be a bird book in every room of my house.

Based on nothing but the blue head, the assumption you're in LA or close to it, and the size and eye and drab female I'm thinking Blue-headed Vireo based on what iBird is throwing at me.

Also I got to watch a big full grown Bald Eagle today on Cross Lake in Shreveport. Getting to where I see them there about once a week even if I'm not looking. The damn things are everywhere these days but they are still one of the most impressive birds you'll ever see and they never fail to impress.

We have one at the house that I have seen more and more lately. I saw him twice today. Yesterday he tried to snach a mallard from the water. Here are a few pics that I took last year...

It was taken with my Nikon D90 with a 18-200mm lens. I am far from a photographer but I am learning. I am trying to convince my wife that I need the 70-200mm lens, but $2400 is a steep battle…

Bookmarked. I started putting some seed down in the yard and am getting quite a mix of birds already.

re: Identify this songbird
Yesterday I had some bluebirds checking out a new bird house I built. I think they thought they were too good for it. Male had a red breast.

A good buddy of mine has two wood duck boxes at his house in BR that are slapped full of 10 eggs a piece.

It's great seeing the Drake perched up on the box in the afternoon.

This your bird?

Real world Blue-headed Vireos don't look like that, their head is really more a dark gray than actually blue. The photographer went a little crazy with photoshop on that one. This is much more typical:

From the original post - blue confined to the head could be Painted Bunting:

The other strong possibilities are Indigo Bunting and Blue Grosbeak. Both can be somewhat mottled this time of year so they could be mostly blue on the head though it's unusual. The females of all of these are drab and similar looking. They all come to feeders, something I've never seen a Blue-headed Vireo do.

Do y'all have any recommendations on certain feeders or foods to get some birds into my back yard?

re: Identify this songbird
Having seen Painted Buntings I don't think there's a chance in hell of misidentifying it. And that eye doesn't resemble a dove in the least.

As for the blue head vireo, we're still in the period where that head would be more blue than gray if they are still in this area, which based on what I've been seeing, there's a lot of birds still here that shouldn't be because it's been such a cold spring.

Not saying that's what the guy saw, but I've seen them with the blue head, and that's likely not shopped. They look just like that. And this year is weird so who knows. I'm in North LA though. Don't know how much difference it would make.

Yeah, the bird apps are great for this. I use Audubon and Sibley both. After I lured a Northern Parula for this shot he flew in and perched on the end of my camera lens. We were eyeball to eyeball which was pretty surreal.

I don't know what it is about birds that's so fascinating to me. Maybe it's the huge variety and the fact that they're so mobile. But I flat love coming across a bird I've never seen before and ID'n it.

re: Identify this songbird
Yeah, you wouldn't think you'd miss the ID on a Painted Bunting but funny things happen when a bird is back lit. I guess the main reason I doubt Blue-headed Vireo is the fact it was on a feeder with a mate. Vireos eat insects and occasionally small berries and I've never seen one on a feeder. Buntings and grosbeaks are seed eaters and are not unusual on feeders.
