I have a semi-auto 12 ga, but thinking of getting a Mossberg pump.
Me and a buddy last night were talking about going duck hunting next year or deer.
Never done either. I do have a flat boat so was thinking duck may be easier to get into.

How would someone who has little concept of land leasing start. any pointers or forums for the first time hunter/

Nap. You can hunt WMA's (state owned wildlife management areas)for starters. No fees other than license. You can hunt them this yr if desired. Many restrictions so read the pamphlet

try it on public land. Find someone near you who hunts to show you the ropes before you tie money up in leasing land. If you already have a 12ga why buy another? Spend that money and get you a ruger american or savage in 270 or 30-06 so you have your shotgun for ducks and squirrels and your rifle for deer hunting.

Most new hunters start by trespassing. Give it a go, it's highly recommended by the board. Just find a place where people are knocking them down and jump in.

As a big fan of a little good old fashioned trespassing, I support this message.

ROGERTHESHRUBBER.....might i add... go on out and collect some random stands you find in the woods to get a good start on gear.... look around and down the clear paths from most stands and you can gather a feeder or 2 as well as some nice cameras this time of year to help with scouting.

Cameras are essential. You can't properly spy on someone elses property without them, and no need to buy any until you try a few and see how they work. People don't seem to mind.

Public land! If you travel to the central and northern part of the state and camp you can find less pressured WMA's, National Forests and National Wildlife Refuges that are easily accessible. As was stated earlier buy you a deer rifle if you already have a shotgun and read the regulations.

As others have stated, try public land to make sure you are going to like the sport before spending money on joining a lease.

No reason to buy another shotgun. Get a rifle.

Drive up a little past Middendorf's and hunt that whole swamp (Joyce WMA) on the right side of the road. Boots and a shotgun are all you really need.

Get off my lawn

Napoleon, see if you can go duck hunting with someone to learn the ropes. Deer hunting is pretty easy at first. Once you get into it, it'll be more complicated. I have always duck hunted with an 1100. No need to buy another shotgun.

I think there was a thread a week or two ago where a guy was asking about starting to duck hunt that had good advice in it. As for deer hunting, you are probably gonna want a rifle. Only place I've deer hunted with a shotgun was in the swamp where I couldn't see far
