But don't want to break the bank.
What brands should I look at it, general pricing, and where should I get it?
Thanks OB.

Palmetto State Armory. You can buy one of theirs of build you own for cheaper. Like $400-500.
Buds gun shop online. Get a basic model Bushmaster or Ruger. S&W also has several around $550-600 I believe.

Ruger AR556 or M&P Sport

What does much a M&P15 sport usually run?

Street price is going to vary, but $550 to $600. Ruger AR556 should be about the same, but at the upper part of that range, $580 to $600.
These are basic, M4 configurations, direct impingement and no frills (one difference is the M&P Sport does not have a forward assist or dust cover, the Ruger does - neither has the traditional carrying handle, and therefore flat top, but with a rail for optics. Both have flip up rear sight. Both have collapsible stocks and standard, non-rail A2 handguards). They are also quality (albeit entry) rifles from well respected American manufacturers. I would say Bushmaster has something in this range, too.
I'm not just as familiar with the PSA rifles - they are popular by some on here, but they are slightly downmarket from the above 2.

What is your budget? AR's run anywhere from $500 to $6500.

I wouldn't overlook the Armalite defender series rifles. They run about $600.

I have an Eagle Arms rifle length AR from the 1990s and it is excellent. That was before Armalite bought them, but I think Eagle Arms was started by one of their former employees. I also have a polymer lower AR-180B. It is, likewise, excellent.
The AR market has grown so much in the past 4 or 5 years, I didn't realize Armalite had a contender in this price range.

Redditors hate this gun. One guy had one where the gas tube was twisted around the barrel. Several have had guns that don't function well.

The M&P will be on sale at Cabela's on Black Friday for $599, and included in the deal is a Caldwell mag charger. Regular price is $739.
I've got enough Cabela's cash to cover the bulk of it, so this is probably what I'm going to go with.

I have a radical barrel on my blackout. Pretty damn accurate and no issues 500 rounds in.

There are always many insightful (I believe) threads on the AR15 platform here (thankfully so because I have learned quite a bit). Not to hijack, but what would OB recommend for something more than a per se 'entry level' AR? Say up to $2500 for discussion's sake. Uses - I just enjoy shooting, want to improve, and would own it for those reasons + of course when SHTF. TIA.
