I Have Lost All Confidence in my Ability to Shoot a Rifle.

Up until this year, I've maybe missed two or three times in my life while shooting at a deer that I can remember. I've been hunting since I was around 5 years old, I'm 23 now. Every deer I've shot at this year (4) I've missed. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I don't know if it's my sight, at least I don't think it's my sight, it's been on every time I've shot to check it was on. I'm not jerking the trigger, putting the crosshairs on the right spot of the deer. I've just got the fricking yips and it sucks.
For example, tonight, I was hunting and around 5:15 a pretty nice 6 point walks out, I shoot. Just by the body language of the deer, I knew I missed, it was quartering away from me. So I put my gun down, look to the west lane and there's another 6 or 8 point standing in the lane. I shoot, and couldn't tell if I hit it or not. So I get down and walk to where it was standing and all I found was hair, went into the woods to look and nothing. Looked for an hour, no blood, no bone fragment, no hair.
Has anybody come across this problem? I think it's all mental, how can I fix this shitty season with not even a week left?

Don't worry you will eventually scare them all off then you won't have anything left to miss

If it makes you feel any better, I missed one right at dark tonight. It was chasing a doe and didn't get a good shot.

did you get out of your stand and look for blood on the first one you shot?

I had my gun on a four wheeler once and the jarring messed the scope up.
I could zero it in and go hunting, i'd get a shot and miss. I missed a doe at 30 yards, it took 4-5 misses before I figured out what was going on.
That scope had been dead on for 10 years and I ruined it.
So in other words, it may be your scope

Get back to the basics and calm down. If you have a shot at the deer and they don't know you're there, then you have time to relax and make a good shot. I missed the same deer twice a couple of weeks ago with a rifle free handed out of a climber and could not believe it. The next one that came in at the same spot, same trail, did not take another step.
User error is real. Trust your equipment, provided your equipment is true, and relax.

After I looked for the one from the second shot. Not a sign of a deer being shot.

So, you missed 2 earlier in the season and 2 more tonight. After the second miss, you should have checked the rifle. Something could be loose or the scope got bumped.
Spend some time at the range, and double check your set-up.

Should have looked for the first one before you shot at the second one not after. Would have been in a bind had you gotten both deer. Just saying

I shot at the two deer tonight with a different gun, that I know was on because I shot it before I went into the woods.

What kind of bullets you shoot? Maybe you hit some of the deer and just didn't get a blood trail. It happens.

The ones I was shooting tonight are just your regular Winchester .270 bullets.

Can't help a ton but I will say: Keep your head up.
I was freaking out the this week because the OB told me I was being irresponsible verifying my zero at 25 yards. My confidence was SHOT.
Put three in the center diamond at 100 before the hunt and knocked a deer dead in its tracks this morning.
CSB I know. But we've got some great folks on here and then there are some ellitists.

Ok, that wasn't in the Op.
I still think range time is in order. Shoot, shoot , and shoot some more.

I know, but I could tell by the way the deer was acting when he ran off that I missed.

Your gun was not sighted in very well. People on here were telling you to shoot your gun again before you went hunting so that you would not miss or worse, wound a deer.
Nothing elitist about that

I'll be that guy and call bullshite. If you think that every deer you shoot at will act hit then you need more experience before you write one off as a miss. As much as I want to bash you for this I just hope you learn.
I don't know what to say about your miss issues other than shoot your rifle, get it on, and baby the hell out of it until you shoot at a deer
Or maybe take up fishing

What kind of rifle and how does the sling mount to the rifle? I used to have a Remington 7400 and the sling swivel went under the forearm screw. As I carried it the sling would loosen the screw and my scope would be off zero. I'd zero it in every weekend and couldn't hit shite. I sent it off to a gun smith and he found the issue. I bought a Rem 700 and haven't had to zero it since.
Also, look at your bullets. They may be shite and not expanding or expanding to soon. You could be hitting the deer but they aren't putting a hole big enough to draw blood.

I know you said you're not jerking the trigger, but you're jerking the trigger. It's something that can come and go depending on where your head is while shooting, and how familiar you are with that particular trigger weight. I really have to concentrate to not do it just at paper when checking zero on my three rifles because each trigger has its own personality.
It's not like riding a bike. It's muscle memory that has to be maintained. Practice until it's like casting a reel or shouldering a shotgun, it just happens.

Right. Some deer act totally different when hit. Ive shot a buck that didn't move when hit and trotted in the woods without a limp. Ending up dead 30 yards out double lunged. If it's not your optics, try get closer to the deer as stupid as that sounds. May require getting out a toasty box stand and setting up on a travel route, but at least it will boost your confidence and put some meat on the seat.
