I have not been a deer hunter for almost 15 years, but my son and I (age 11), along with BigHoss were invited up to woodcock hunt on a property yesterday with our bird dogs. After the woodcock hunt, we were invited to deer hunt. I was given the green light for my son to shoot his first deer and we were directed to a box stand on the ground near a food plot, the wind was blowing in our face.

We had 5 deer come out a once, 4 does, 2 were yearlings and a 4 point. They entered the field 40-50 yards away. The 4 point came out last and the does moved quickly out of range. I texted our gracious host to let him know some deer were visible. The deer was small and I was planning to let them pass but I was instructed to have him shoot, doe or the 4 point, it didn't matter. The does were out of range but the 4 point was broadside at 50 yards.

I took the following video of him trying to get the scope on the deer. Due to the shaking, no shot was taken, the deer moved out of range and hung around at 125 yards for the next 30 minutes.

Youtube, 20 seconds

My nine year old shot his first deer earlier in the season, after the shot he told me "dad I'm shaking I'm not cold and I'm not scared but I can't stop shaking" I told him that's buck fever and that's why we do this.

Awesome video hopefully he gets his shot next time

That is step 1. Step 2 is a scope bite.

I can still picture that buck from 1986 when I froze and didn't shoot. I think about it every year during deer season.

Amen!!! The name of the game. He will get another chance, but he'll remember that the rest of his life.

Great sharing that and that you videotaped it.

Hell im 53 and (not so subtle brag) I shot a 12 point last month and was shaking almost as bad as he was! I had to wait about 5 minutes to get a shot and was about to hyperventilate. Just glad my sons were there to share it with me.

My dad only hunted/hunts quail. He would wake up and take me out to the stand and sit me down and go back home when I was old enough. Talk about ate up with it.

It's amazing how times you didn't get a shot or it didn't work out stick with you longer than some of the times you kill.

One of my clearest memories of hunting was when I was 9 or so sitting on the ground with my dad, having a clear shot and him telling me not to shoot because there was a tree in his way but not mine. Another time him telling me to shoot at a deer across the ridge but not being able to find it in my scope.
