Hunting off the levee

I'm trying to find some areas around Baton Rouge to squirrel hunt. I live off of River Road between LSU and L'auberge. Can you hunt on the river side of the levee?

If you have permission from the landowner you can. Land on the river side of the levee isn't public.

I've never tried any WMAs near BR, feel like I'm going to wander into someone's spot and they're going to be pissed and I'm just going to cause a cluster frick

I got a ticket just shooting guns on that side of the levee south of town. Oh to be 24.

Chase down information on a couple of land owners and start knocking on doors. We have been doing this for years in the marsh and very rarely are we denied permission. Just make sure you approach them with a well thought out proposal. Be respectful, don't drive on the levee, call before you plan to go so they know you're there, and most important drop off a few squirrels or at least make the offer.

We used to go mud ride, get drunk, and shoot skeet all of the time right north of Ben Hur

If you want a ticket. I've already tried asking the owners to the gravel pit and they said no.

Plenty squirrels and pigs in Sherburne. Its a public WMA, there are no such things as people's spots. If you run into someone deer hunting, say excuse me and move off in a different direction.
As far as behind the levee, I see that ending with a confrontation with some LEO's

Be courteous and if someone is already there go somewhere else. But dude, it's public land: first come, first served. Especially for squirrel season, it's not like you're screwing up a deer hunter (if you're bow hunting on opening weekend you're just asking for some squirrel hunter company).

A good friend of mine family actually owns a lot of that land now, it's split up between the owners of the two random houses on river road and LSU. My friend and his brother live in one of those houses and say every year they catch old men duck hunting on the river side of the levee, of course they all try to claim they have been hunting there for years or casually try to hide guns behind a tree.

Man those were the good days. 16yrs old having a "school project" to work on and getting hammered on the levee.

The property with the long walking trail paralleling the levee? In the curve?
