Here goes:
I bought 10 acres in Waller County where I am building a new house. At the back of the property is a small creek head where I know there is substantial deer traffic. I put up a camera this weekend to get a better idea how many and what they are.
I have seen a few does, I'm sure there are a few bucks passing through, as well.

My deer hunting experience is limited. I have hunted with a rifle a few times, with some success. I know nothing about archery hunting.

In Waller county, you can only take a doe during archery season. So, I'm thinking about getting a crossbow and seeing what I can do at the beginning of bow season. Any advice on a crossbow, or hunting tactics would be appreciated....

Before someone starts with the "are you elderly/disabled?" BS... I am very able bodied, but know nothing about archery, I'm thinking about a crossbow for this first yr, and maybe trying to pick up a compound bow for the following season...

I just want some free meat, because I'm gonna be broke when I finish this house!

I would check to confirm you can hunt on the property. I think 10 is the min but there may be some other rules for waller county depending on how close you are to a town.

You can pretty much buy an entry level CB from Bass Pro that will be more than suitable for your needs. But I would suggest you go to WestHouston Archery and go try out their store, if for nothing else to pick there brains and see what your options are. They are a good group of guys.

But pretty much all you need to do is get a feeder put corn or protein in it, set up a groud blind or tree stand and the rest should fall into place. 30-40 yard shors should be pretty easy with a CB.

This pretty much exactly what I am thinking.

I saw a well worn game trail, I put out a bag of corn and some sugar beets, and traffic seemed to increase tenfold (exaggeration? Maybe) based on the tracks.

I just put the camera and added some corn yesterday. I'll check the camera in a few days.

Yeah, put a corn feeder out and set up any kind of blind or stand and you shouldn't have any problem killing a few does.

I imagine the hunting would be ok, but it sure seems like it would be an issue on 10 acres having your wounded deer leave your property

Is it far enough from the property line that you deer will have time to die without leaving your property?

eta... didn't see above post when I wrote this.

yep, you will need permission from neighbors to retrieve wounded or dead deer if crosses property line

some people will get pretty irate if you're caught/witnessed retrieving a deer on their property. Better pray the neighbors aren't PETA lovers as they will try to sabotage your hunting opportunities

I know the neighbors. I'm good from that standpoint. It's out in the country, all good folks out there. They are OK with my plans.

I just want some good meat, and hell why let good meat just walk away!?
frick that.

Compound bows depreciate faster than boats. I would think crossbows are the same way. I would look around on Craigslist and FaceBook and try and find a used in your price range. Maybe there are some other classifieds that are local to your area.

ten point, Excalibur or Parker for crossbow. You can kill with any but those are my top three.

Thanks guys. I'm pretty pumped.

It's not going to be some trophy lease, but it should make for good meat. Honestly, I'll be happy just to be out hunting.

I did a lot of bird hunting growing up, since moving to BR for college I haven't gotten to hunt a whole lot.
