I took the course earlier this year. I went last week to get my hunting license and they didn't ask me for any proof of completing the class.

Also, a friend of mine's gf has never taken the class and got a license earlier this year.

Is there no longer a requirement?

I sure thought it was. That's odd.

It's very much a requirement. Idiots at Walmart and academy don't typically ask for it.

I purchased my Illinois non-resident license on-line this morning and was not asked for it, which I thought was odd.

It was also odd that I can't hunt tomorrow with my license because one has to purchase the non-resident hunting tag over the counter at select locations once the license is acquired. The land owner is purchasing the tags tomorrow and the hunt starts Friday.

I believe it shows up in the computer when you get your license.

I also believe that someone without Hunters Safety can get a license but they have to be hunting sitting next to a hunter that has completed the course. This part could be wrong but that was my impression.

What KR said. I would suggest that you invest in a lifetime license. It is well worth it imo.

Quick question. Let's say I have a lifetime hunting and fishing combo. Do I still need to have my orange card? It's been destroyed for a few years.

It is only required if you want to hunt by yourself. The hunter safety course is not required if you are under the direct supervision of someone who has taken the course.

quote:

Who Needs Hunter Education?
Every hunter is encouraged to take hunter education. However, Louisiana law requires all hunters born on or after September 1, 1969 receive Hunter Education Certification from a Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries approved course prior to hunting in Louisiana unless they are under direct supervision of a qualified person.

So a person who wants to sit in a deer stand by themselves has to take a course, but a girlfriend or a buddy who wants to join you on a hunt can purchase a license without first taking the course. Obviously anyone who is truly interested in hunting should take the class though.

Eh...it's a good idea to have it. I doubt you will need it though. In case you lose your lifetime, you would need it. To be on the safe side, call LDWF and ask for a replacement hunter's safety certificate/card.

That is the plan. I got this yearly one as a last minute thing. I'll be getting the lifetime next year

I think you can get a lifetime with the hunter's safety number printed on it if he's going the replacement route.

To answer the original question - you can hunt without taking the class under particular circumstances if you're supervised.

Look at your license and it will say "Restricted".

When you go to buy a hunting license they ask for your drivers license. They type in your DL number in the computer and the WL&F dept program tells them if you have taken the corse or not. If you haven't, you get a restricted license and have to hunt within eye-sight and ear shot of someone 18yrs or older who has taken hunter safety course.
