Anyone have any experience with them? Good or bad stories? Or can recommend any other breeders around south Louisiana for goldens?

ETA- looking for a golden for a pet not a hunting dog already have lab to hunt.

I've heard many good stories about them. Wanted to make sure they have healthy pups and that it's not a puppy mill setting. Their prices make them seem like they're the best around here.

Their website also seems like it's an amazing place. Just wanted to get some first hand stories.

best dog and best friend I've ever had
he was a saint in every way

be advised though that a troubling number of their dogs die of cancer, as did mine at age ten. this may just be a consequence of the breed at this point, but it's there regardless. I did not think 10 was old for a golden and he was in perfect shape and perfect health prior to getting sick

in any event I want to reiterate that he was the platonic ideal of a family pet and companion and I miss him every day. just a beautiful animal with the personality and temperament to match

I'm on my second golden from Huntington Farms. Some of the best house pets you'll find. We had to put my first one down at age 9 with lung cancer. Unfortunately, the golden retriever breed is very susceptible to cancer (maybe the #1 breed for cancer). All pure breds have their own health issues though. Bulldogs have heart disease, labs/shepherds have hip disease, etc.

The only negative thing about Huntington is that they don't have a strong drive to retrieve. I'm not going to hunt mine but even if I wanted to I couldn't see him doing it. But if you're looking for just a house dog, they're really hard to beat.

Thanks ATH. I have a black lab that duck hunts and is very good at it so the desire to retrieve won't bother me. Mainly looking for a great tempermant for me and the gf and a buddy for my black lab.

The best dog I ever had or known came from there.

He was plagued his whole life with health issues. Terrible skin allergies, hip issues, and a mystery illness that left his back half paralyzed for a month. It's pretty clear that they are pretty badly inbred at this point.

That's about as much as I can say negative about him because I still miss him pretty heavy.

No problem man and they're a perfect fit for you then. Just get ready for your gf to like the puppy more than you. My wife likes our pup more than me most of the time.

Sister and BIL have one and he's a great golden. Up in age and no major health issues. I just picked up a GR puppy from another breeder. I like Hunningtons dogs but the price tag is fairly steep, which I'm sure you are aware of. Hard to go wrong with a GR as a great companion as long as the hip and eye certifications on the parents check out.

skin allergies are pretty common of all goldens
mine would get hot spots and then scratch them bloody
finally we found the right food and it disappeared for good

here's what you need to know about a golden

1) they shed more than you would think is physically possible
2) ear infections and skin allergies
3) tennis balls (you'd better buy them by the case)
4) approach any body of water and they are in

and more love than any of us deserve

My dad is a vet and he's said the worst he's seen is the Boxer breed. He's even referred to them as "cancer factories" due to how common it is. I imagine goldens are up there but maybe not exactly #1.

My brother's black lab and my cousin's yellow lab actually shed more than my golden. I think it's because lab hair is short and coarse as opposed to long and soft. The vacuum cleaner picks up golden hair easier.

As for Hunnington, my girlfriend has a golden she got from Triple L, I think near Alexandria. I met him when he was 1, now he's 2 and after a year of my guidance and training I also consider him my dog. Well, not to mention the fact that he's not a stubborn SOB with a father figure in the home!

But given the situation and the fact that I didn't get to train him as a puppy, he is a super friendly, mild mannered pup. I've never seen him be aggressive, he loves everyone, plays well with other dogs, has great genetics and didn't take long to find a good food that doesn't irritate his skin. The only issue I've had with him is that he's hauled arse away from me on a few occasions but I think that's more the fact that he didn't have strict training as a puppy and I've worked on him with that one. He's really come a long way and I think he will be an excellent family pet when I have little Bapples in the future.

Buddy has one from Triple L and she has hauled away from him several times.
I also find that the Triple L goldens don't have nearly as much of a coat as Hunnington dogs do.

the cream colored thick coat is the hunnington "brand"
you can recognize a hunnington dog immediately

I guess I'll be the outlier. I've known several. I live close to HF and a lot of folks I know have dogs from there. Most were good dogs. Three were absolute nightmares, but I attribute their behavior more to the owners than to the dogs themselves. Two of those nightmare dogs lived together. Of all the HF dogs I know, about half have had health issues (that I'm aware of).

I personally wouldn't buy a HF dog because I don't like the white coloring, and I don't have the need for a $$$$ bench bred dog, but both of those are strictly preferential.
Even though they're bench bred dogs, they require training. Don't forget that and you'll be fine. I'd also recommend inquiring as to the temperament of the parents of the litter you're looking at. Ask to meet those dogs if possible.
