I shot some 16ga paper shells last season. They went bang.

I would. Powder won't become higher pressure over time as far as I could tell. If the chemicals in the powder were degrading I feel like it would just make the round weaker.

Now if the bullet were set back in the case I would be nervous of an overpressure condition. But I think your fears are unwarranted.

Ole Geauxt bought that ammo before he was a teenager.

It's probably older than that

Lasts decades. I was running 1940's surplus 30-06 in my Garand without issue.

Nothing wrong with the ammo if it has been stored properly

It'll go bang, but I'd keep those and the box tucked back in the corner as collectibles.

I would shoot it unless it has rust or corrosion on it. Just be careful with it if it slow fires.

I had a 3 1/2" 12 gauge shotgun shell "slow fire" on me when I was using a BPS. I guess I had gotten the shell wet before. I stood up to shoot a duck, pulled the trigger and then I out of muscle memory pumped to eject the shell before I realized it didn't fire. The ejected shell (which comes out of the bottom of a BPS) went off just as the brass was clearing the chamber. Blew the bottom half of the brass out the bottom of the shotgun and into the water at my feet. Scared the fool out of me when that blasted out the bottom of the shotgun. Took me a moment to make sure all my parts were whole.

Are they still for sale at $3.85? I'll take em.

This. That box looks like it's in excellent shape. Any ammo telling you it's 'smokeless' is definitely old.

Some of my friends in the military say they've shot .50 rounds from the 40's (this was in the early 2000's).

As long as it was properly stored, it should be fine.
