Alright OB, I need some pond wisdom from yall. My MIL has a 3.5 acres pond in the piney area of E TX near Jefferson/Marshall. It was stocked somewhere around 2006-2008 I believe.

- In September of 2011, I caught a 7lb bass in there and released her.
- Spring of 2013 I broke off a very large bass.
- May of 2013, my FIL caught an 8-10lb (no scale) bass on a live bluegill under a jug
- February of 2015, a buddy of mine broke off a very large bass
- Today, someone caught a 24" long, 8-10lb bass on a shiner.

So my question is how many bass of that size can a pond of that size sustain? The pond is currently overpopulated with small bass and large bluegill if that makes any difference in your answer. Is it possible we have hooked and/or caught the same fish 5 times?

Probably 8-10 depending on how deep, and forage base/supplemental feeding, etc..

depending on how deep

It has spots that are 15-20' deep, but the average depth is probably around 6' or less.

forage base/supplemental feeding

Fathead minnows are present but not in any huge numbers. The only supplemental feeding is a small catfish feeder that sprays a cup of food 2x a day

Probably 8-10 depending

That just seems like a ton. Of the probably 500 bass I have caught out of there in the past 4 years, less than 10 have been over 14".

its probably closer to half that in reality, or somewhere in between, but don't judge it by what you catch, cause those older fish are very smart.

You should probably take some of those smaller bass out if you haven't been

Not sure anyone can give you any answer with certainty.
It would depend on food available and structure, and water.
The fact that there's bass that big now means they could spawn and have others grow that big if the conditions are right.

My dad has an acre pond. Dwf did a survey on it. He had 5 over 7 including one around 10.

i have the same situation with a pond in west feliciana. several small bass that are easy to catch and MUCH bigger fish that will not bite anything - ive seen them hit on occasion. ive got a really good forage base of small bream that is damn hard to compete aginst.

This article on "Small Bass Issues" by the MDWFP perfectly describes the conditions of my MILs pond and how to fix it. Worth a read for anyone experiencing similar pond management issues.

quote:

Small Bass Issues
Currently, the most common problem Fisheries Biologists encounter in Mississippi farm ponds is an abundance of small bass from 8-14 inches. A few large bass are usually present and the bream are hand-size -- really nice. Catch rates of small bass are high and body condition is usually poor. They appear skinny and have shallow or inverted bellies. They may have large heads and small bodies...

Hard to answer your question, but I'd start taking out bass under 12" at a rate of about 20 per acre per year.

Used to do a lot of reading when I had time to manage my grandmother's pond, and those numbers always seemed to be the go-by to promote fish growth and limiting predation of the baitfish.

What kind of line are yall using to break off so many big fish? I can't remember the last time a fish broke my line.
