I've been hunting 7 years and have killed 4 bucks and 3 does. One a year is all I could ever need.

Handguns: 50 whitetail deer, 2 mule deer, 2 antelopes and 1 turkey.
Rifles: Lost track, but probably 20-30.

Is the deer population that much lower in the southern part of the state?

I dont know that but I do know at least the southeastern portion of the state is so much more populated than the northern part that there isn't a lot of room for deer to be left alone......it's so much more rural up north

The deer processors up north do thousands of deer a year each and Baton Rouge can't even support one good one for example

When I hung one on the wall bigger than my dad ever shot, and the biggest in the camp I was told to be selective... between sports and being a teenage I didn't make it to the camp much, and I haven't had a decent place to hunt in 5 years, plus I chase ducks

I know on the weekends up here, the local processors will usually have them stacked up. One of the main ones usually has their coolers full Thanksgiving weekend. They have to shut down for a day or two and just cut and wrap to make more room. It is unreal at the meat they process each year.

It's seems like once guys get to about 50 deer some of the thrill is gone from the posts. Not a negative just facts that after you shoot that many, a doe probably just can't be that much of an excitement.

The old "I ain't mad at em anymore" saying applies

At my rate, starting hunting late in life I'm on pace to hopefully get to that point god willing. Doubt I get much last it if at all

I understand being selective. Two of the areas that I hunt, we are selective. The club I hunt at south of Crossett just follows state rules. Has to have three points on one side or spikes less than three inches to be considered a legal buck. Not a good rule to follow if you are trying to let one mature. We had a couple of guys from Lafayette join the club this year and they act like it is the best place ever. They both killed 6 apiece.

Yeah they always call several times to pick up deer because they're out of room.....I can't make an 8 hour round trip just to pick it up so mine have to wait til next trip

Dowlings in Arcadia says they do about 4500 a season and there's one in Farmerville I believe that does about the same

I have friends that hunt in north La and the processors up there are so much more reasonable than down here.

I forget what the price/lb. is for processing. But on average it cost about $85 or so to have one skinned, gutted, and processed. Sausage and special cuts cost more. I usually just get the basic stuff when I don't do it myself. I would rather make my own sausage.

shite a lot of places around here won't even take them if they aren't quartered at a minimum and then charge you $50 to debone it. THEN you get into the processing.

Meh...not as dumb as the ones inside the levee in East Carroll! I think there are just so many in our area. The does get pretty smart to your stands. Those levee deer just stand there and look at you drive by if you are in a truck. It was nothing to see 75 deer come out on those pipelines in the afternoon. Wayyyy too many does and scrubs.

Yep......up north for an extra $10 they'll gut it too

Makes the decision late on a Sunday a little easier to shoot knowing you can grab it and drop it off whole and haul arse home

Sounds like it would be a lot easier and cheaper to do it yourself in that case.
